Tanzania: TB Outbreak Hits Mirerani Mines

Arusha ? A RECENTLY conducted study in the Tanzanite Mining Hills of Mirerani in Simanjiro District has revealed that the quarries also serve as "factories" for the deadly Tuberculosis (TB) infections.
"The outbreak of diseases such as TB and Fungus are common among artisanal and smallscale miners," states the "Case study of Tanzanite Mining in Mirerani" which focused on "Corporate Social Responsibility in the Tanzanian Mining Sector." According to the report, the crowding in the tiny shelters and narrow mine shafts highly contribute to the spread of TB and other infectious diseases...
TB cases at Mererani too high - researchers

Research conducted recently at Mererani mines in Simanjiro District by Kibong?oto National Tuberculosis Hospital found that 20 out of 700 people screened had contracted tuberculosis, a high health risk to the surrounding community.
According to Dr Allan Kimario from the National TB monitoring and evaluation programme in the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare the number of people infected is too high.
Dr Kimario said the number of infections could escalate rapidly, given that Mererani is a highly populated area...
