Thai cooked chicken exports won't be affected by H5N1 outbreak, says minister
BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) ? Despite re-emergence of bird flu in the kingdom, Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan Sunday said that exports of Thai cooked chicken have not been
affected.
The minister expressed confidence that this year's exports of cooked chicken will reach the target of 350,000 tonnes.
Even though the re-emergence of bird flu has had an adverse impact on the exports of fresh Thai chicken, cooked chicken exports have been unaffected as the foreign importers still have confidence in the quality assurance and standards of Thai-produced chicken, she said.
Overall exports of Thai cooked chicken in 2006 are expected to be at least 300,000 tonnes.
Nevertheless, the ministry will try to raise it to 350,000 tonnes as previously targeted, with Japan and the European Union (EU) as the major importing markets, the minister said.
Besides, according to Khunying Sudarat, Thailand is set to speed negotiations for exporting its poultry products to other high potential markets with high purchasing power, including the United States, United Arab Emirates, New Zealand and Australia.
NZ and Australia are seen as having quite high potential for Thai cooked chicken exporters as well as for sales of the kingdom's seafood products.
However, Khunying Sudarat said, Thailand may be in neck-to-neck competition with arch rival Brazil in the chicken export arena. (TNA)-E009
