River water linked to deaths of kids

Lahad Datu: It has been confirmed that three children of a Filipino sub-contractor have died at Kg Bahagia, near Felda Sahabat, Tunku, believed after drinking river water.
Village Head Mohd Aziz Lingam, when contacted Saturday, confirmed the tragedy and that the father of the siblings worked at Felda Sahabat.
According to Aziz, the three reportedly drank water from the nearby river and developed high fever soon afterwards. "They were rushed to the clinic located at Felda Sahabat 7 and given treatment but were pronounced dead," he said.
On whether the river water was contaminated with pesticide, he was uncertain, except that there was no evidence of fish in the river dying from poisoning.
Kg Bahagia is located about 100 metres from the Felda Sahabat oil palm plantation.
On Friday State Health Department's Director Dr Mohd. Yusof Ibrahim, when contacted by Daily Express, confirmed the deaths of at least two children. His department is awaiting chemistry reports to determine the cause of the deaths.
