Measles cases confirmed in several districts

Published on Saturday, March 9, 2024 10:49
:
(Official Togo) - “ Cases of measles have been confirmed in several health districts of the country ”, in Kéran and Oti-Sud placed in a state of epidemic, announced Friday March 8, the Minister of Health Moustafa Mijiyawa .

Investigations are already underway to find and effectively manage possible new cases. Also other arrangements were made. Among other things, strengthening epidemiological monitoring and early warning, raising awareness among populations about routine anti-measles vaccination and the actions to follow.

“ Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease. The measles vaccine is safe, effective and remains the main means of prevention to this day ,” specifies the minister.

Populations are therefore invited to exercise increased vigilance and adopt basic barrier behaviors (regularly wash their hands with soap and water or with a hydroalcoholic solution, clean and disinfect surfaces, avoid touching their eyes, nose, mouth, cover your mouth and nose with the crook of your elbow or with a tissue if you cough).

Measles is a highly contagious viral infectious disease mainly affecting children. It is transmitted by inhaling droplets of secretion (nasal or throat) emitted by an infected person. It very often manifests itself with a high fever, a runny nose, red eyes and a rash.

If you experience any signs, go immediately to the nearest health center. “ The sooner the patient is taken care of, the more chance he has of healing, ” concluded the minister.

March 11, 2024

Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa, Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Access to Healthcare, revealed that the prefectures of Kéran and Oti-Sud are currently in a state of measles epidemic. This situation follows the confirmation of several cases in various health districts across the country. Faced with this threat, preventive measures have been put in place, in particular the strengthening of epidemiological monitoring and awareness of routine anti-measles vaccination.

Populations are strongly encouraged to adopt preventive behaviors to contain the spread of the disease. Here are some essential recommendations:

-Regular hand washing: Frequent hand washing with soap and water is crucial to reduce the risk of contamination.
-Cleaning surfaces: Be sure to regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and counters.
-Compliance with hygiene measures: Avoid touching your face, especially the eyes, nose and mouth, to prevent transmission of the virus.
-Prompt consultation in case of symptoms: If you have symptoms of measles, such as fever, rash and cough, consult a health center immediately for appropriate care.
-Collective vigilance and cooperation are essential to stem this epidemic and protect the health of all. Let's stay informed and take care of each other.
