?Dengue killed my son?

EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD Andrew Anirudh had high hopes of receiving good grades in this year?s CAPE examinations. But he never got a chance to collect the results. The former A-Level pupil of Miracle Ministries College in Couva, died yesterday at San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH), days after contracting the deadly dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Anirudh?s father Siewlal was inconsolable as he recounted the last times spent with his son. Siewlal sat on a chair at the family home in Rodney Road, Orange Field, Carapichaima and wept as he gazed at a photo of his son. He explained that two weeks ago, his son began experiencing symptoms associated with dengue and was taken to the Couva Health Centre.

Staff members took several blood tests but told relatives to return last Thursday since a machine was not working. ?We eventually carried him by a private doctor who confirmed he had dengue. On Thursday, he fainted while going to the wash room and was again taken to Couva. They transferred him in San Fernando Hospital...? Siewlal sobbed.

The weeping man begged municipalities to spray and control the breeding of the disease vector the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. ?Spray the area and all other areas so that families do not have to go through what I and the rest of my family are going through. Dengue killed my boy! He was my love...my sugar,? Siewlal said.

Anirudh?s mother Nalini said her son?s condition deteriorated rapidly. ?He was very weak and could not help himself. I believe the doctors at San Fernando could have done more for him. The situation in the hospital is very sad, it is very poor,? Nalini said.

Dengue patients sleep on floor

Some two dozen people, suspected dengue cases, were forced to lie on the floor of the Ward 15 corridor at the San Fernando General Hospital for nearly eight hours yesterday because there was a shortage of beds.

Many of the patients were seen lying on benches as they waited for other patients to be discharged so that beds could become available. One man said, ?I don?t know when they will get this right. So many sick people here waiting for a bed... and they bringing in more people.? A woman claimed she had been forced to wait several hours at the Accident and Emergency Department before being admitted to the ward.

?Right now I am still waiting to get a bed. They saying they may put me downstairs but so far nobody attending to me,? the woman said. A hospital source said up to 8 pm on Tuesday, the ward had a total of 62 patients. ?We just cannot find the space. We had a lot of patients over the weekend. This is the medical ward so many people with suspected dengue are brought here,? the source said. According to the source, some of the patients were diagnosed with dengue. ?These patients should have been isolated with nets around them but as it is, nothing is being done. So everyone here is likely to fall ill,? the source said.

Man, 20, warded with dengue after hunting trip

RAKESH Sookhoo, 20, of Mendez Village, Siparia, is currently warded at the San Fernando General Hospital being treated for dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), a severe form of dengue. According to medical sources, Sookhoo was diagnosed with the DHF on Thursday after being admitted to hospital. Speaking with Newsday from his hospital bed, Sookhoo said he believed he was bitten by mosquitos while hunting on December 10 at Cat?s Hill, Moruga.

He said on December 12, he began feeling slightly ill but his condition worsened over the next three days and his family took him to the hospital for treatment.

The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has 1,408 dengue cases recorded for TT for week 32 (mid-August) and three deaths. The strain of dengue circulating for 2010 was Type 2.
