T&T businesswoman first dengue death for year

?(Trinidad Guardian) A San Juan businesswoman has become the country?s first reported dengue fatality this year. Tricia Seuraj, of Bissessar Street, El Socorro, died on Monday morning at the St Clair Medical Facility of what is believed to be dengue haemorrhagic fever. Seuraj, who was a section leader in Hart?s Carnival band, was admitted into hospital on Saturday complaining of flu-like symptoms. A close relative said her condition worsened.


She died at 10.30 am of organ failure and internal bleeding at the Intensive Care Unit.

Trinidad & Tobago : Probe into what may be second dengue death

Investigations are continuing into the death of a Wallerfield security guard. At a news conference yesterday at the Ministry of Health?s head office, Port-of-Spain, chairman of the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) Dr Stephen Bhagan said the investigation into possible dengue victim Nicolas Marin, 21, had started. Marin died on February 8 at the Sangre Grande Hospital.

Questions were raised by family members about the cause of death on Marin?s death certificate. The certificate stated the cause of death as an arboviral illness. Chief Medical Officer Anton Cumberbatch explained to the the media that a dengue screening test was administered at the hospital which returned with a negative result. Cumberbatch said: ?The screening tests may be inconclusive and samples were taken at the post-mortem that will be tested to determine the actual cause of death.

Govt confirms dengue death

The Ministry of Health yesterday confirmed the first dengue-related death for the year, while it is investigating a second death allegedly due to dengue.

This was announced yesterday by Minister of Health Therese Baptiste-Cornelis, at a press conference at the Health Ministry, Park Street, Port-of-Spain. The Health Minister also disclosed a new strain of the dengue virus appears to be emerging locally.

Not referring to her by name, Baptiste-Cornelis stated that Tricia Seuraj?s death has been ?confirmed as a result of dengue.?

Seuraj, 39, died on January 31 at the St Clair Medical Centre. It was believed Seuraj was the country?s first dengue death for the year, although this was not declared by the Public Health Laboratory of the ministry, which is responsible for doing confirmatory tests. The ministry had said the St Clair Medical Centre did not report the dengue case to the ministry, however, doctors at the institution denied this, saying they did report that Seuraj died from ?complications of suspected dengue infection.?

Confirms first death from dengue in Trinidad and Tobago
Port of Spain, Feb 15 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Health of Trinidad and Tobago confirmed the first death from dengue this year and investigates other also under suspicion of this disease, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Its owner, Therese Baptiste-Cornelis, said a young San Juan district, north, died Jan. 31 after contracting the hemorrhagic variant of the condition.

Tricia Seuraj, as he called the victim, entered the hospital in your area with flu symptoms, and few hours later he was sent to the intensive care unit with worsening physical condition.

Baptiste-Cornelis also reported that a group of experts examined samples of the body of a second person with a similar picture of Seuraj.

The young Nicholas Marin vomited blood and suffered breathing problems before he died last week at the Sangre Grande Hospital.

The minister said the specialists will also investigate the possible mutation of the strain of the virus that causes dengue.

In this situation, the official urged the public to take extra hygiene and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites.

Directed also to the health institutions in the islands to report all possible cases of dengue, leptospirosis, influenza and cholera.

Trinidad and Tobago was on the verge of a national emergency by dengue in 2010, when he recorded three deaths and 600 infections.

The explosion of infection forced the Government to enable new facilities to treat patients, mostly from rural areas.

Girl, 8, suspected dengue death

ONE week after Health Minister Dr Faud Khan announced there was a dengue outbreak in Trincity, there is an unconfirmed report that an eight-year-old girl died of the disease after being discharged from the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.

It was reported that the girl, Asia Archibald, had symptoms of the illness and was taken to the Arima District Facility, earlier this week, and her relatives were given a referral letter for the Mt Hope complex.

Asia, a student of Arima Girls? RC School, was placed on drips and tests were done but the girl was discharged before the results were known. The girl died about seven hours after she was sent home, it was reported.

Dead girl?s baby sister contracts dengue

Less than 24 hours after her eight-year-old sister Asia Archibald died from dengue fever, three-year-old Amia was yesterday diagnosed as having contracted the virus.

The confirmation that Amia had contracted dengue fever came hours after an autopsy was performed on Asia that confirmed she had died from the mosquito-borne virus.

3 brothers contract dengue

THREE young siblings have been admitted to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) after showing symptoms of dengue fever.

On Sunday the three siblings five-month-old Donte Vialva, 17-month-old Eli and two-year-old Jayden, were warded at the hospital.

According to reports Jayden first began to vomit last Thursday at the family?s home at Warden Road in Point Fortin. His condition worsened and his brothers began experiencing similar symptoms accompanied by fever.

The children?s parents Arafah Jones, 22, and Cheena Vialva, 27, took them to SFGH where blood tests were conducted. The results confirmed that the children had contracted dengue and up to last night they were in the hospital.

Statistics show 1,800 reported cases up to July

Unofficial statistics from the Insect Vector Control (IVC) Division have revealed there are more than 1,800 reported cases of dengue fever in the country. The county of St George East has the highest number?445. Specialist medical officer in the division, Dr Clive Tilluckdharry, said dengue was endemic to T&T and the four types existed. He said at any given time there could be increased activity. Tilluckdharry said there was a baseline of 500 to 600 cases a year but in recent years that figure had increased. Up to July this year, there have been 1,885 reported cases.

Mutant dengue attacks children

The strain of the dengue virus prevalent in Trinidad and Tobago (TT) is fatal to children, Minister of Health Dr Fuad Khan yesterday announced during a press conference at the Ministry of Local Government?s Kent House office in Maraval.

Khan said the dengue virus has been present in TT for the past 30 years, but a ?mutant? strain of the virus has evolved, which has proven to be fatal to children, ?the most vulnerable group in the country.?

Dengue fever can be caused by any one of four types of the dengue virus: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. A person can be infected by at least two, if not all four types, at different times during a life span, but only once by the same type.

Head of Insect Vector Control Division (IVCD) of the ministry Dr Clive Teeluckdharry explained that the dengue virus is ?worse and more dangerous? when developed a second time.

Khan said the current form of the virus is a mutant form of type four which has been present in TT before.

He assured, however, his ministry has put all measures in place to deal with children affected with dengue, such as rapid access to testing and re-hydration to bring up the children?s platelet levels, ?which should be between 400 to 450.? He also said dengue kits have been made available to all public health institutions, but noted that it should only be used after having a fever for more than two to three days. A dengue kit is a rapid test for the virus in which a drop of blood is placed on a strip and a chemical is added which gives a positive or negative result.

Teeluckdharry said 1,800 cases of dengue have been reported for the year thus far, with the highest number of cases in the counties of St George East (445), Caroni (332), St George Central (270), St Andrews/St David (226) and St Patrick (207). In 2010 there were 4,894 cases of dengue in TT. Teeluckdharry said dengue symptoms were vomiting, restlessness, bleeding, headaches, common cold, gastroenteritis, back pain, high fever and eyeball pain.

?Once you suspect its dengue do not use aspirin drugs but stick to Paracetamol drugs. It takes three to four days to diagnose dengue, so seek immediate medical assistance if your area has dengue,? Teeluckdharry advised...

THIS COUNTRY is in the middle of a dengue outbreak, Dr Rai Ragbir, the chairman of a special purpose State-board involved in the Government's fight against dengue, has said.

Ragbir, chairman of the Community Improvement Services Limited, made the statement yesterday before meeting with Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma to discuss plans to combat dengue across the country.

"The number of people infected with the dengue virus is enough to constitute an outbreak," he said.

"An endemic means we have it always, and an outbreak by definition means we have more cases. So if you want to use the terminology outbreak then yes we do have an outbreak," Ragbir said.

"And it (dengue) will affect each one of our lives and especially for our children. So we have to clean up our environment first," he said.
