Tuberculosis is gaining strength in Honduras

Tegucigalpa .- Nearly 3,000 cases of tuberculosis were recorded in 15 months in Honduras, said Sunday the health authorities.

"We found 2,907 people with the disease, with higher incidence in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula (the second largest city, about 180 kilometers north of the capital), told reporters the general director for the Promotion of Health Ministry Mario Najera, said AFP.

"We tried to isolate patients not to infect others,''he said.

Tuberculosis causes constant cough with phlegm for more than 15 days, in addition to fever and bloody sputum, sweating, high fever and weight loss.

"When these symptoms occur, people must attend immediately to health centers,''said Najera, who added that Honduras is the second in Central America with more cases of tuberculosis after Guatemala, which has about 4,000.

The most affected in Honduras are among men, 58.6%, and women, with 41.4% of cases.

N?jera said the most vulnerable are low-income Hondurans because they live in severe overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. According to official statistics, 69% of the eight million people in the country are in poverty.
