I have been tracking these outbreaks for the past several weeks, and decided in order to make everything easier to find, to link them all to this thread. No reliable laboratory has found conclusive evidence of any known pathogen that would be consistent with the symptoms in any of these outbreaks. I am not implying the same pathogen is behind all of them - in fact the variation in epidemiology and CFR seems to rule that out. For each outbreak, I am posting the single link with the most information on the outbreak. You can Google the location of the outbreak or search on FT as all of this has been posted elsewhere. Here is what I have been tracking:
Mukumbi - DRC - outbreak of meningitis - 140 cases, 45 deaths as of 7/7, 75-80% of cases in children under age 5. Two fatal cases positive for Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria according to INRB in Kinshasa, but not others.

Neno/Tsangano - border of Malawi and Mozambique - unknown disease similar to meningitis - meningococcal ruled out - 103 cases, 15 deaths as of 7/6, 5 patients still under treatment as of 7/11. Outbreak started either mid-May or June 24, depending on source. WHO investigation started before 7/3. Samples sent to South African laboratories; results pending.

Malacca - 100+ cases, one death at the RTD training academy in Malaysia. Outbreak started 4/30, death on 5/4. Outbreak declared contained in mid-may. Blamed as bacterial meningitis, but CFR likely too low. Respiratory symptoms as well. Infection of at least one nurse, one radiographer, and the fiancee of one trainee. Person-to-person spread likely. Far too many articles to pick one best, so try this one.

Seremban - Malaysia - two separate "outbreaks". One at a police training center, early to mid-May, 200+ cases, one death. Blamed on influenza B outbreak, cause of death changed to pericarditis postmortem. Original sources gone. Link is FT thread.

Second case in Seremban - one undiagnosed fatality, died 7/12. Failed to respond to antibiotics. Viral meningoencephalitis presumed. No known contact with previous outbreak.
