Disease expert says measles could break out again
Measles is likely to break out again because only 85 percent of vaccinated people are protected, the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Director Nguyen Tran Hien said Thursday.
According to health agency reports, the recent outbreak of measles infected more than 4,000 people in 47 cities and provinces.
Hien said the disease can spread quickly and anyone can contract it, so the public needs to be educated about early diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
According to Deputy Minister of Health Trinh Quan Huan, some localities still can?t differentiate between measles and rubella symptoms despite an information sheet distributed by the ministry.

PANO ? Since early this year, 7,629 patients had to be hospitalized for measles-related illnesses, said Associate Professor Nguyen Tran Hien, Head of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, at the Anti-measles Disease Conference held in Hanoi on March 26.
Among them, 4,347 cases were confirmed as measles, which was the highest figure figure for a decade.
Experts explained that measles vaccines given to children between 9 and 12 months old, were only 85% efficient in terms of granting immunisation. Also, only 90% of new born babies have been vaccinated annually and, as a result, at least 25% of vacinated children are potentially at risk from the disease.
