Approximately 140 children and adults will be tested for tuberculosis Monday at Charlotte Central School by the Vermont Health Department in the wake of news that a school employee has been diagnosed with an active case of TB.

Patsy Kelso, Vermont state epidemiologist, said Thursday that the tests will be done as a precaution to ensure that anyone who might have the condition is treated and that it does not spread to others...

Vt. health officials: 8 more infected with TB

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Health officials say there's still just one case of active tuberculosis in Vermont, but eight people who come into regular contact with that patient now have a latent form of the disease.

"In this first round we found eight positives at the school. So this is eight skin test positive results. This means the individuals are infected with TB, it does not mean they are sick," explained Patsy Kelso of the Vermont Health Department.

Tuberculosis is an uncommon bacterial disease that attacks the lungs.

Charlotte Central School Teacher Laura Hall has active TB, which means she's showing symptoms and can spread it. It's unclear how she got it and when. Seven students and one adult at Charlotte were found to have latent TB, which means they're not showing symptoms and are safe to be around.

The Vermont Department of Health says no one at Freedom Rains Children's Center in Colchester was found to have TB. The day care is another place where Hall works. But the search for others who may have TB isn't over...

In January, a teacher at the school was confirmed to have an active case of the disease. It now appears eight other people, including seven children, have been infected...

8 more test positive for TB at Charlotte school

The Vermont Department of Health announced Tuesday that eight more children at Charlotte Central School tested positive for tuberculosis infection. None of the children are sick with the disease, nor are they contagious, according to the state.

The department Friday tested 223 additional students and staff at the school for the infection in the wake of an employee's diagnosis with an active case of the disease. That employee is now off the job and receiving treatment.

To date, a total of 15 children and one adult have tested positive out of 380 students and staff who have been tested and evaluated. Parents of children who had positive tests results have been contacted by the Health Department...
