Measles case in infant spurs concern from county health officials

An infant who recently returned from India with his family has been diagnosed with measles, a serious disease that can lead to pneumonia and encephalitis, an inflammation and swelling of the brain...

...Melnick, who is Clark County Health Officer, said he is most concerned about folks who visited two places where the infant had been and may have been exposed to the virus on Monday:

? Evergreen Pediatrics, 505 N.E. 87th Ave., between 1:30 and 6 p.m.

? Southwest Washington Medical Center, in the hallway near the pharmacy or at the outpatient lab, between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m...

Local, regional and federal health officials are trying to determine whether a Clark County infant who flew home to Vancouver on Sunday may have spread measles to others in the area at Portland International Airport and two medical offices.

Clark and Multnomah county infectious disease experts, along with representatives of the federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, met on a conference call to discuss the risk of transmission from a 7-month-old boy who was exposed to the disease while outside the United States.

The baby, traveling with his family, developed the telltale red measles rash while flying for more than 20 hours from India to Portland after a layover in San Francisco, said Dr. Gary Oxman, health officer for Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties.

By the time the boy was on the final leg of the journey home, on Alaska Air flight 2614 (operated by Horizon), he may have been coughing and sneezing -- the primary way the highly contagious airborne disease is transmitted.

The next day, the child visited two medical facilities in Vancouver on Valentine's Day: the Evergreen Pediatric Clinic between 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the pharmacy or outpatient lab at the Southwest Washington Medical Center between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., health officials said...

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A school-aged child has contracted measles -- the second case in as many weeks -- forcing health officials there to once again warn people about the dangers of the infection...

...The child with the latest diagnosis was believed to have visited the 7-Eleven grocery store at 5101 NE 112th Ave. in Vancouver on Sunday, Feb. 27 between 4 - 8 p.m. Anyone at the store at the time is considered to have been exposed to the infection...

Vancouver teen infected with measles attended Vancouver Christian School, went to 7-Eleven

...The young teen, who was not identified, attended classes at the K-12 Vancouver Christian School while contagious Friday and also visited a Vancouver 7-Eleven store at 5101 N.E. 112th Ave., at some point between Sunday afternoon. The teen then sought medical help at the Southwest Medical Group at Fisher's Landing Tuesday. He was diagnosed with measles Wednesday afternoon.

Health officials are urging people who have not been vaccinated and may have been exposed to the teen at school or between 4 and 8 p.m. Sunday at the convenience store to avoid going out in public from Friday, the earliest time symptoms are likely to emerge, through 21 days following exposure. In this case, that period runs to March 20...

...Health officials say the teen went to a 7-Eleven store at 5101 NE 112th Ave. in Vancouver on Sunday and then City Harvest Church. The student also went to the Southwest Medical Group at Fisher's Landing on Tuesday.

He also went to school Friday, unaware he was ill...

PORT ORCHARD ? A 2-year-old Port Orchard boy has contracted measles, the first case in Kitsap County since 1999, according to the Kitsap County Health District.

The boy is at home and no others around him have contracted the disease...
