Marquette University Students Informed of a Confirmed Case of Mumps on Campus

Marquette University issued a public health advisory after a case of mumps was identified in a student.
The following email was sent to Marquette University students:
"A message from Carolyn Smith, MD ? Marquette University Medical Director:
A confirmed case of mumps has been identified in a Marquette University student who resides in a residence hall. The individual is currently recovering at home and the City of Milwaukee Health Department has initiated the appropriate follow-up communication with close contacts of the case. Marquette University Medical Clinic is encouraging all members of the Marquette community to take the following steps to stay healthy and protect themselves...

Another Marquette University student has been diagnosed with the mumps, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the city of Milwaukee to six, the Milwaukee Health Department reported Monday...
Three University of Wisconsin-La Crosse students have been diagnosed with the mumps.
The La Crosse County Health Department announced Tuesday they had confirmed cases of the viral infection that targets the salivary glands. The health department said it is working closely with UW-L staff to prevent further spread of the disease, which travels through coughs, sneezes and shared drink containers and eating utensils.
Dr. Kristin Swanson, the interim medical director at the UW-L Student Health Center, said the first case was diagnosed last week and all three of the students diagnosed had received their measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations. Unlike the measles vaccine, which is more than 98 percent effective, she said the mumps vaccine is only effective about 90 percent of the time...
