    2011 thread here

CDC http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/index.htm has not yet begun compiling human case data for 2012. Cases in animals are making the news indicating that transmission has begun:

Horse put down after contracting West Nile Virus

HARRISBURG (PA) -- A horse has been euthanized due to an active case of West Nile in Northampton County.
This case heralds the arrival of West Nile Virus in 2012 and is the earliest report of a horse illness since the disease reached Pennsylvania in 2000, according to Kevin Sunday, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. This case also serves as a reminder to vaccinate horses against the virus.

CDPH Reports First Human West Nile Virus Case of 2012

              Date: 6/18/2012

              Number: 12-026

Contact: Anita Gore or Norma Arceo - (916) 440-7259

              SACRAMENTO

A 70-year-old female in Kern County is the first confirmed human case of West Nile virus infection in California this year, announced Dr. Ron Chapman, state health officer and director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The woman was hospitalized, but is now recovering.

"This first confirmed West Nile virus case reminds us that we must take precautions to protect ourselves and our families from mosquito bites,? said Chapman. ?West Nile virus activity is greatest during the summertime.?

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito. The risk of serious illness to most people is low. However, some individuals ? less than 1 percent ? can develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis. People 50 years of age and older have a higher chance of getting sick and are more likely to develop complications. Recent data also indicates that those with diabetes and/or hypertension are at greatest risk for serious illness.

To date in 2012, West Nile virus has been detected in 15 California counties.

CDPH recommends that individuals prevent exposure to mosquito bites and West Nile virus by practicing the ?Three Ds?:

              1. DEET ? Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaradin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 according to label instructions. Repellents keep the mosquitoes from biting you. DEET can be used safely on infants and children 2 months of age and older.

              2. DAWN AND DUSK ? Mosquitoes bite in the early morning and evening so it is important to wear proper clothing and repellent if outside during these times. Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep mosquitoes out. Repair or replace screens with tears or holes.

              3. DRAIN ? Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property, including flower pots, old car tires, rain gutters and pet bowls. If you know of a swimming pool that is not being properly maintained, please contact your local mosquito and vector control agency.

California?s West Nile virus website includes the latest information on West Nile virus activity in the state. Californians are encouraged to report all dead birds and dead tree squirrels on the website or by calling toll-free 1-877-WNV-BIRD (968-2473).

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile Virus across country, human cases confirmed: How to stay safe

(CBS News) Reports of mosquitoes with West Nile virus are popping up all over the country, with several people already confirmed to be infected by the potentially dangerous disease.

The CDC has more on West Nile Virus.

                      Comment from CBS website:

My life changed forever 9 years ago when I was bitten by a mosquito after coming out of a restaurant in Colorado Springs. Within a few days I had developed neuroinvasive West Nile Virus.

You can read my story here: http://accessfitness.com/west_nile.htm

I was one of the first people to be awarded disability because of the permanant damage to my health from WNV. It was so widespread in Colorado in 2003 that there were hundreds of patients in support groups across the state. Many died, and many, like myself, are permanently disabled from the neurological damage.

Take is seriously and protect yourself from exposure to mosquitos if they test positive in your area. Children should not be exposed to DEET, but there are safer alternatives like Bite Blocker.

Person Tests Positive for West Nile

Lincoln ? A Hamilton county man in his 70s tested positive for West Nile Virus according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. He was hospitalized and released. It?s the first positive human case seen so far this season.

?West Nile activity is increasing across the state. If you haven?t been taking precautions to avoid mosquito bites, start now,? said Dr. Joann Schaefer, the state?s Chief Medical Officer and Director of Public Health for DHHS.
Use mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535.
Dress in long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks when you?re outside.
Dusk and dawn are times when mosquitoes are most active. Limit outdoor activities.
Drain standing water around your home. Standing water and warmth breeds mosquitoes.
More counties are seeing infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes in Adams, Douglas, Hall, Madison, Scottsbluff, Sheridan and Richardson counties tested positive for West Nile Virus and so have birds in Madison and Phelps counties according to DHHS.

West Nile is transmitted to people through the bite of a mosquito that picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Most people who are infected have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. About one out of 150 people infected with West Nile Virus become severely ill. However, people over 50 and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to the disease and are more likely to experience serious consequences.

West Nile fever includes flu-like symptoms such as fever and muscle weakness. Symptoms of the more serious West Nile encephalitis include inflammation of the brain, disorientation, convulsions and paralysis.

DHHS tests mosquitoes and birds to determine the level of virus in the state. With the assistance of local health departments, DHHS is collecting and testing dead birds. To report dead birds, contact your local health department. To find your department, go to http://dhhs.ne.gov/publichealth/Pages/wnv_contacts.aspx.

You can find West Nile case updates and more information on the DHHS website at http://dhhs.ne.gov/publichealth/Pages/wnv.aspx.
