Bird flu threat hits Russia

Bird flu tests are being held and villagers are being monitored in Russia’s far east after the suspicious death of a dozen chickens. Doctors fear villagers in Vozdvizhenka in the Primorsky region may have been exposed to the virus.

Over forty birds have been slaughtered and burned to stop the possible spread of the disease, and the residents have been quarantined.

Vets are also disinfecting property and vaccinating fowl in nearby villages.

From last year at this time...

Lake Xingkai/Khanka is located on the border of the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation. It is the largest lake in Northeast Asia, as well as a transboundary waterbody between China and Russia. The lake is called Lake Xingkai in China and Khanka Lake in Russia. The Russian Federation designated the lake as a Ramsar Convention wetland site, on the basis of its importance for migratory bird species. http://www.worldlakes.org/lakedetails.asp?lakeid=8619

Migratory birds put officials on alert

Liu Huajin grows more and more tense the closer spring gets.
Liu, an official at Xingkai Lake Natural Reserve in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, is charged with preventing outbreaks of avian flu at the reserve. And at a time when millions of birds from southern China and Southeast Asia are stopping at the lake to rest on their way back to Russia and other neighboring countries, the burden of this responsibility grows particularly heavy.
"The temperature is rising. The ice on the lakes is melting, which is attracting more birds," he said.
The situation exposes the reserve, which sits along the China-Russia border, to possible bird flu outbreaks.
"It is a vital time for anti-bird flu work as tens of thousands of birds come here every day," Liu said after a recent trip out to an observation post.
"All 41 of our staff members are working on the issue. The whole reserve is on high alert."
Local authorities have mapped out a package of policies to prevent outbreaks of avian flu this year. They include a regional surveillance system and efforts to distribute basic information about the disease to local residents.
The authorities have so far set up 10 observation posts within the reserve. They issue daily reports on any suspicious or abnormal activity by migratory birds.
If dead birds are found in the reserve, they are immediately collected and taken to the bird flu laboratory in Harbin, the provincial capital, for testing, Liu said.
The area surrounding where the dead birds are found is placed under quarantine.
In addition, more than 100 local residents, including farmers and fishermen, have been given basic training about how to deal with avian flu, Liu said.
Xingkai Lake is only one of many stops for migratory birds in Heilongjiang Province. Its dense river systems and vast plains make it an ideal place for birds to rest during their migrations.
Twelve national-level and 47 provincial-level observation posts have been established within the province, said Tao Jin, chief of the Heilongjiang Provincial Forestry Department's wildlife protection office.
"We have found several dead birds, but none of them were found to have avian flu," Tao said.
"This is a difficult period for Heilongjiang Province, one of the major stopovers for migrant birds in northern Asia," said Li Xiaomin, an ornithologist from Northeast Forestry University.
Wild geese and widgeons are believed to be the main suspects in carrying the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.
"They will not leave until early next month," said Li.
He said people should avoid touching these birds and make sure they kept their poultry in enclosed spaces to avoid possible infections.
"This is a sensitive time and any mistakes could cause serious trouble," said Li.
To prevent any outbreak of bird flu, Yin ChengJie, vice-minister of agriculture, ordered comprehensive spring vaccinations around the nation and called for stricter monitoring work.

Bird flu strikes Russia

Initial tests show the deadly bird flu virus has been found in a village in Russia’s Far East, now under quarantine.

Doctors fear villagers in Vozdvizhenka in the Primorsky region may have been exposed to the virus.

Local authorities are sending more medical personnel and vets to the area.

The alarm was raised after 10 chickens died unexpectedly.

They had belonged to a local, Anatoly Kirsanov, who believes the infection spread from dead wild geese and ducks which he’d bought.

“I woke up in the morning, looked inside my chicken coop, and saw all my chickens were lying around dead. It was absolutely unexpected,” he said.
Anatoly was instructed to kill and burn the remaining forty birds in his hen house.

Although no new cases of dead poultry have been reported, vets are visiting every house in the village to make sure fowl is isolated.

They are also disinfecting property and vaccinating fowl in nearby villages.

Police have set up roadblocks around the village and doctors are monitoring the health of residents who may have been exposed to the virus.

At the moment no humans have been found affected by the respiratory diseases.

The quarantine will last for at least three weeks.

“The avian flu is dangerous to humans. Maybe, we’re too cautious but we just have to make sure no local residents are affected,” explained Anatoly Semyonov, Deputy Chief Inspector.

Meanwhile, Russia's Chief Medical Officer, Gennady Onishchenko, says health officials are poised for further outbreaks.

“This is the first incidence during the period in spring, when birds migrate from various regions around the world to the Russian territory. So we can say it’s only the beginning and we expect further outbreaks in Siberia, the Urals and in the European part of Russia. But we are prepared for this,” he stressed.

So far more than 150 people around the world have died from bird flu.

The disease is [not, IOH] highly contagious for humans.

The first deaths were reported in Hong Kong in 1997, where 6 people died.

In 2003, bird flu became an international threat when thousands of birds throughout Eastern Asia were infected.

Two years later the virus spread through Kazakhstan and Russia to Europe.

I wonder if this same practice (hunting/selling infected migratory waterfowl) has caused outbreaks in other parts of Asia, Egypt, Africa.

The migratory bird list, locale description, OIE report, and news reports finally present a coherent image of human-catalyzed disease dispersal.

Impressive teamwork sleuthing.

Recent outbreaks in northern Turkey are due to feeding wild bird entrails to domestic chickens.

It will be interesting to see if they track down the hunter and he tests positive. Which begs the question, is anyone in those areas doing studies of hunters? Also, it would not be unusual for the waterfowl discards to be given to pets as a food additives. Wonder if anyone's retriever or pets in general have died?

A piece of news from above:

(...) It is expected that poultry can become infected through feed, which consisted of strips of wild waterfowl. (...)

Yes, that was evident from the news article phrase, above:

the owner of podvor'ya (property) produced the shooting of the wild planktonic birds. "their plucks he used as the fodder for the poultry".

That was how the hunted birds infected the unhappy owner of the small holding that lost its chickens overnight.

Its not like they didn't know!

See Theresa42s babelfished Russian post, #5- dated two years ago.

Specifically warns against contact from hunted birds, in Primorsky.

So this infection cycle occurs repeatedly in the same locations, year after year.

Maybe for the same reasons.

Cour giblets fed wild birds
Experts cited a possible cause of the outbreak of avian influenza. It could become carriers of wild waterfowl, which had acquired the landowner farmstead hunting.

According to the boundary-value management Rosselhoznadzora owner farmstead Kirsanow, he otstrelival wild waterfowl, which strips then used as feed for poultry.

Primorye authorities temporarily banned the spring hunt waterfowl and other wild birds migrating now from the southern Asia to Russia.

Khabarovsk establish cordon

Hunting of waterfowl game in the province over the past three years is not repealed, this year's hunting season begins in the southern region since 12 April. Hunter issued a memo to explain how spared from the bird flu.

The southern regions are also vulnerable
Vulnerable territories in terms of the spread of avian influenza are considered and southern regions of the country.

Primarily, it is present in the Southern Federal District, and part of the Siberian Federal District" -- April 9, told journalists Director of the Department of the Ministry of Agriculture veterinary RF Ivan Rozhdestvensky.

According to Christmas, a strategy to combat influenza, which has been implemented in Russia since 2005, allows the virus to contain the threat of N5 N1. The mix includes vaccination seriously the health Poultry, limiting presence in the poultry farms and wild birds ism, the restriction on the possession of personal subsidiary poultry farms Poultry workers.

From post #15:

"The alarm was raised after 10 chickens died unexpectedly.

They had belonged to a local, Anatoly Kirsanov, who believes the infection spread from dead wild geese and ducks which he’d bought."

If I am reading the above correctly the owner bought the dead wild waterfowl and is NOT the owner of the farm.

But now I read above,
" According to the boundary-value management Rosselhoznadzora owner farmstead Kirsanow, he otstrelival wild waterfowl, which strips then used as feed for poultry."
So it looks like farm owner/hunter is the same individual.

Also, if a farm has a AI outbreak and has both pigs and birds, are the pigs slaughtered/tested as well?

History Bird flu strikes Russia - from Russia Today

April 11, 2008, 19:58

The disease is highly contagious for humans. The first deaths were reported in Hong Kong in 1997, where 6 people died.

In 2003, bird flu became an international threat when thousands of birds throughout Eastern Asia were infected. Two years later the virus spread through Kazakhstan and Russia to Europe.
