DENGUE cases for the first half of the year in countries of the Americas have reached 1,009,576 with 21,213 being severe forms of the viral illness. The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has 503 deaths recorded. The regional case fatality rate is 2.3 percent.

For the Non-Hispanic Caribbean 31,798 dengue cases have been reported with 285 severe and five deaths up to epidemiological week 23.

In its Epidemiological Alert issued on July 7 PAHO has called for ?intensified measures to control dengue and an integrated response by matching all actions in space and time to achieve greater impact. The health sector should make every effort in the diagnosis and treatment of dengue patients to prevent deaths while strengthening the structures of vector control?.

It said the response had to be comprehensive involving all health institutions, other ministries, non-governmental organisations, private sector and public.

?Simultaneously, it is necessary to continue the effort to advance the implementation of National Strategies for the Integrated Management of dengue prevention and control and strengthen weaker components?.

PAHO has reports of severe dengue outbreaks in several countries of the Americas. It said weather conditions have assisted with the proliferation of Aedes aegypti, the vector for dengue. ?Unusual changes in the seasonality of dengue have been registered affecting since the beginning of the year to Central America and the Caribbean islands during periods considered unusual,? PAHO stated. Rainy conditions in the Central American sub region and Caribbean have resulted in increased dengue transmission while countries which were protected by cold weather conditions are also facing the dengue problem.
