BANGKOK, Jan 6 (TNA) ? Thailand on Wednesday reported one more death from Influenza A(H1N1) virus, raising the country?s total number of fatalities to 192, said Dr Paichit Varachit, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Health.

In a report on the A(H1N1) situation from December 20 to January 2, the dead victim was identified as a 27-year-old woman who was 16-weeks pregnant living in Nakhon Sawan province.

She also had suffered from chronic diabetes and high blood pressure for three years.

The woman contracted the A(H1N1) flu on December 24, then died on December 30, Dr Paichit said.

Additionally, the Department of Disease Control confirmed that 35 new patients had been infected with the H1N1 virus in 12 provinces from December 20 to January 2.

Counting from May 2009 to January 2, the country?s cumulative death toll hit 192 while confirmed patients reached 29,921.

According to the flu report issued by the World Health Organization on December 30, the death tally worldwide hit 12,220.

Thailand?s portion of global total number of fatalities is 1.6 per cent and the situation is categorised as being under control. (TNA)

Thailand confirms four new deaths from A(H1N1) flu
BANGKOK, Jan 13 (TNA) ? Thailand?s Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday reported four more deaths related to Influenza Type A(H1N1), raising total death tally from what was formerly called swine flu to 196.

In a weekly report on the A(H1N1) flu situation from January 3-9, Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr Paichit Varachit confirmed four new fatalities.

The dead were identified as a 24-year-old man living in Chaiyaphum, a 30-year-old woman in Roi Et, a four-year-old boy in Nakhon Ratchasima and a six-year-old boy in Chiang Mai.

All had suffered from asthma and obesity.

Counting from May 2009-January 9, the country?s cumulative A(H1N1) death toll stands at 30,805.

Chiang Mai, Trat, Chiang Ra, Phayao and Songkhla were the first five provinces reporting the highest cumulative number of deaths.

During the past week, a number of persons with flu-like symptoms who received medical treatment at hospitals have increased from nine per cent to 10 per cent.

Meanwhile, the number of persons suffering pneumonia rose from four per cent to 10 per cent, Dr Paichit said.

It is reported that the A(H1N1) flu pandemic has been found some cool areas. Health officials are worried that the virus may spread in rural areas and local people having flu-like symptoms may treat themselves by taking anti-flu drugs which may lead to severe symptoms and deaths.

In addition, the public health ministry has urged hospitals nationwide to closely monitor patients with respiratory diseases to prevent the spread of A(H1N1) influenza.

Regarding the A(H1N1) vaccination, Manit Teeratantikanont, director-general of the Department of Disease Control said no severe allergies were found in vaccinated groups in 31 provinces during the first two days of the vaccination programme on January 11 and 12.

The ministry reported that 3,769 at-risk people had been vaccinated. It is expected that more persons in high-risk groups will be injected as they are confident of the vaccine?s safety.

The ministry offers free vaccinations for five high-risk groups, including medical personnel, women who are at least three months pregnant, persons weighing over 100kg, the disabled, and persons with chronic diseases through March. (TNA)

Swine flu cases on rise again

Two more people died from type-A (H1N1) influenza this week, bringing Thailand's toll to 198, the Disease Control Department chief said Tuesday.

Manit Teeratantikanont said the victims were a 37-year-old Chiang Mai woman and an 82-year-old male emphysema patient in Ayutthaya.

The Swine flu infection among general flu patients and pneumonia patients also rose from 45 per cent to 10 and 15 per cent, indicating a new round of outbreak especially in the North, he said.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Phaijit Warachit reported that from January 11 until Tuesday, 15,011 people at risk had received the Swine flu vaccine. Of these, 11,189 were medical personnel and 1,971 pregnant women.

Three more people died of type A(H1N1) flu last week, bring in the death toll from the virus to 201, Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit said on Monday.

He said the first was a 5-year-old girl in Bangkok who had been sick with a heart ailment since her birth, the second a 7-year-old boy from Sakhon Nakhon who was suffering from malnutrition, and the third a Bangkok woman, 27, who suffered from heart disease.

From Jan 11-Feb 4 a total of 160,179 had been vaccinated against H1N1. They included 120,000 medical staff, 36,917 people sick of chronic diseases, 14,684 pregnant women, 4,524 overweighted people, and 1,269 disabled.

BANGKOK, Feb 15 (TNA) ? Thailand on Monday confirmed five more deaths related to Influenza Type A(H1N1), raising the country?s death tally to 206, said Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit in the ministry?s weekly report.

Three deaths were identified as a four-year-old boy with a history of malnutrition in the northern province of Nan and a 23-year-old pregnant woman in Bangkok who experienced chronic heart disease. The third was a woman aged 30 with obesity in the northeastern province of Surin.

The other two deaths in the northern province of Chiang Mai included a nine-year-old boy and a 62-year-old woman with chronic heart disease and renal failure.

Regarding the A(H1N1) vaccination programme, Mr Jurin said that 235,078 high risk persons received flu shots, which was less than 40 per cent of the targeted number of two million recipients.

The Ministry of Public Health began its free vaccination programme on January 11 to protect the public against Influenza A(H1N1) by administering about two million injections to people in five high-risk groups at state and private hospitals nationwide. (TNA)

TypeA (H1N1) influenza claimed five more lives in the country over the past week, Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said yesterday.

He urged schools to check their students each morning and immediately send anyone with a fever to a doctor.

"There are signs the infection rate is increasing," he said, adding that his ministry was closely monitoring the situation.

Jurin urged those in risk groups, such as obese people, to have themselves vaccinated against this strain of flu.

"We've prepared 2 million doses of vaccine, but so far only 300,000 people have come forward," he said.

Mr Jurin said they were a two-year-old child in Bangkok who was sufferring from chronic lung ailment, a 65-year-old woman in Chiang Mai who had kidney disease and diabetes, and a boy, 3, in Phitsanulok who had no record of a chronic disease.

A total of 291,302 people in the five risk groups had been vaccinated against the flu, he said.

Three more patients died of the A (H1N1) flu virus last week, increasing the flu fatalities to 212 since its first outbreak in April, Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit said on Wednesday.

The flu victims were 28 year-of-age man in Chiang Mai, 28 years old woman and 55 years old man in Chonburi, he added.

The minister said 937 more people were confirmed to have infected by the flu virus last week.

The type-A (H1N1) virus has infected 937 people over the past week and three people have succumbed to the infection, Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said yesterday.

The fatalities included a 28-year-old man in Chiang Mai who suffered from kidney, heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver; a 28-year-old woman in Chon Buri who developed flu-like symptoms on February 1 and received the antiviral drug on February 7; and a 55-year-old man in the same province who developed symptoms on February 14 and got the antiviral drug on February 18.

Jurin said delayed treatment was the main cause of the deaths, and has instructed doctors nationwide to administer antiviral drugs as soon as patients appear to have flu-like symptoms.

So far, 212 people have died from the influenza and laboratory tests have confirmed 34,273 infections.

The Public Health Ministry is also keeping a close eye on cases in Khon Kaen and Mukdahan provinces after discovering that infections have been spreading among primary and secondary school students, especially among those who went on school camping trips.

So far, about 349,566 people in the high-risk group have been vaccinated against the virus. The highest number of people vaccinated is in Lampang, followed by Lamphun, Phrae, Rayong and Prachin Buri.

Meanwhile, the ten provinces where less than 10 per cent of the population have received the flu shots include Pathum Thani, Samut Songkhram, Chon Buri, Kanchanaburi, Satun, Bangkok, Chanthaburi, Nonthaburi, Ratchaburi and Suphan Buri.

"I have told ministry inspectors overseeing these provinces to find out why the numbers are so low and report to me next Monday," Jurin said.

Six more people died last week of H1N1 flu, bringing the death toll since the outbreak of the disease on April 28 last year to 218, the Public Health Ministry announced on Monday.

Against the target of 2 million, only 404,983 people in risk groups have been vaccinated against the type A (H1N1) influenza.

The ministry has campaigned for people in five risk groups, including medical staff and those sufferring from chronic diseases, to get vaccinated.

Six people, including a baby died last week from the influenza type-A (H1N1) in different parts of the Kingdom. Most already suffered from chronic illnesses.

Two of the six flu victims died after receiving the drug oseltamivir, but doctors said the vaccine [sic] was given too late to be of help.

"Provincial governors in their areas have now been assigned to look into these cases," Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said yesterday.

He said one of these two was a one-month-old baby boy in Chon Buri, while the other was a 60-year-old man in Bangkok.

Jurin said the elderly man suffered from diabetes and emphysema at the time he came down with the flu.

There have been 34,794 confirmed infections and 218 confirmed deaths since the type-A (H1N1) flu hit Thailand last year.

The government offers free vaccines against the type-A (H1N1) flu to people in risky groups and will continue to do so till the end of this month.

Currently, 404,983 people have come forward to be vaccinated - 46 per cent have been healthcare workers and 22 people with chronic illnesses.

Some 7 per cent were people who weigh over 100 kilograms.

Jurin said the government had prepared two million doses of the vaccine.

According to a survey conducted by the Mental Health Department, 57 per cent of respondents had confidence in the vaccine's effectiveness. Those who did not said they were worried about possible side-effects.

But Jurin said few serious side-effects had been reported by those who took the vaccine.

BANGKOK -- Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit announced Monday that Thailand had another fatal case of the A/H1N1 influenza, raising the nation's death toll from the new flu virus to 219.

Jurin was quoted by a Thai News Agency as saying that the latest fatality involved a 58-year-old man from the country's southernmost province of Pattani.

In a separate incident, a 40-year-old man from the province of Petchaburi, who was participating in the anti-government rally in the capital Bangkok was found infected with the flu virus.

Prior to this, a Thai reporter was likewise found to have contracted the A/H1N1 virus as she was covering the rally.

To date, a total of 561,199 Thai people were inoculated against the new flu strain.

The Public Health Ministry on Monday confirmed that a person has died from the influenza A(H1N1) virus over the past week, raising the total number of fatalities in the country to 32 this year.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said the second swine flu outbreak from Jan 1 to Apr 30 this year had infected at least 7,915 people and killed 32.

Mr Jurin said 1,090,208 people throughout had received the H1N1 vaccines so far.

"The number of H1N1 cases has declined as people have become more aware of the preventive measures, adding that more people have received the vaccines," the minister said.
