Dallas County will offer H1N1 flu vaccinations for children with underlying disease starting Friday at its clinic located on North Stemmons Freeway, health officials said today.

Starting at 8 a.m. Thursday, parents can call the county's H1N1 flu vaccination appointment hotline at 214-819-6001 to set appointments for their children. Appointments will be scheduled over a three-day period - Friday, Monday and Tuesday - and will take place at 2377 North Stemmons Freeway.

These appointments are reserved for uninsured Dallas County children who have medical conditions and are between the ages of 6 months and 18 years, the health department said.

Those who do not qualify because of age are invited to come to the walk-in clinic that opens at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Non-Dallas County residents will be turned away. The vaccine will be dispensed according to groups of people with the highest risk for severe flu. Those include pregnant women and people who care for infants younger than 6 months old.

Dallas County Health and Human Services also announced this afternoon that at 14th person -- a 35-year-old man with significant underlying medical conditions -- has died of the swine flu. Officials released no other details, citing patient privacy.

Health department director Zachary Thompson said that recent shipments of vaccine have allowed his department to speed plans for public vaccinations.

While the phone-in program will be directed only for children with other illnesses, the Wednesday clinic is intended for anybody considered at high risk. County officials have said their doses are intended as a "safety net" for people who have no health insurance.

The county health department currently has 10,700 doses of the 2009 H1N1 vaccine on hand. As of last week, 42,000 doses had been delivered to private medical providers in Dallas County. Local health officials say they do not know when more will arrive. Yesterday, federal health officials said the supply was increasing, but that vaccine would remain relatively scarce for several more weeks.

Tarrant County will be holding its first mass vaccination clinic Friday, aimed at pregnant women and children with chronic illnesses.
