15 specialists appointed to check on influenza A(H1N1) ICU care
PETALING JAYA (Sept 8, 2009): The Health Ministry has appointed 15 medical specialists to visit the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and check on the Influenza A(H1N1) treatments in hospitals nationwide.

"At the moment there will one in each state, who will go around all the hospitals and clinics in the state to check on treatments for the Influenza A(H1N1) patients," Health Minister Datuk Sri Liow Tiong Lai told a press conference today after closing a media workshop on Influenza A(H1N1) at a hotel here.
The 15 specialists are senior clinicians are were assigned last week. They will start their rounds within the next two weeks and will also interact with community to gauge their awareness of the pandemic and advise them accordingly.
"My ministry is very concerned that the upcoming festive season and <i>balik kampung</i> activities will sharply increase the number of people catching the A(H1N1) virus, especially when there are movements in big numbers," Liow said.
Liow said he had also directed Health director-general Tan Sri Mohd Ismail Merican to set up special team of doctors to treat Influenza A(H1N1) patients recovering in ICU to prevent and/or treat those contracting secondary infections.
According to the ministry, no new deaths were recorded yesterday, and the death toll has remained steady at 73.
One hundred twenty-six new patients with Influenza-like-Illness were admitted to hospitals nationwide and at the same time 233 have been discharged, bringing the total number of patients being treated in hospitals to 1,176.
"From the total number, only 372 patients are confirmed positive of the virus, of which 40 are in ICU with 25 high risk cases," Liow said, adding that smokers are at a higher risk as their respiratory system has been comprised.
The minister also commended the Malaysian Organisations of Pharmaceutical Industries?s sponsorship of hand sanitisers for transport businesses, saying the initiative is of huge help to the Health Ministry in controlling and reducing the spread of H1N1 amongst the community especially during the Hari Raya festival.
He urged more businesses and companies to come forward to help the Health Ministry and the community as part of their corporate social responsibility.
"People can sanitise their hands while boarding public transports and using the escalators and elevators at train stations, besides wearing face masks," Liow said.
"So with sanitisers available at strategic places, the possibility of catching the virus can be reduced. We hope to increase the level of the awareness and hygiene amongst the public."
