Costa Rica: deaths rise to 17 swine flu

SAN JOSE - The swine flu deaths rose to 17 in Costa Rica on Friday after the authorities reported the death of a young 20 years of capital.
Dr. Mary Ethel Trejos, Director of Epidemiological Surveillance Ministry of Health, told the AP that the couple suffered from a thyroid disorder and was obese, which are some of the risk factors that health officials have warned.
Hours earlier, the ministry reported in a communiqué on the 16th death, a young man of 28, also of San Jose.
"We are at the peak of the first pandemic wave with an attack rate of 14.2 per 100,000 inhabitants," the ministry explained in a statement.
He emphasized that throughout the country have been confirmed cases of influenza A H1N1, but are concentrated in the central provinces, with higher rates of attack and where hospitals reported 22 people in intensive care.
To date, 606 laboratory confirmed cases and 757 remain to testing. Around 3775 were scrapped.
The authorities decided to hold next Monday the resumption of lessons in schools, after mid-year holidays were extended for a week, but suspended the pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, holding religious of the year, due to fear of a massive spread of the virus.

It rises to 16 deaths in a pandemic of influenza A (H1N1) in Costa Rica
AFP-AMERICA RADIO-The death toll of the influenza A (H1N1) or swine flu rose to 16 in Costa Rica, a total of 606 confirmed cases, reported Friday that the Ministry of Health.
"To date there have been 16 deaths. We are at the peak of the first pandemic wave with an attack rate of 14.2 per 100,000 residents," explained the official report.
In the last two days, three people died bringing the number of deaths from 13 to 16: two men, both aged 28, and an elderly man of 75 who suffered from Parkinson's disease and heart disease, explained the Ministry of Health.
The authorities also reported that 22 others are in delicate health condition, and receive intensive care at various hospitals in the country.
Most of the deaths until this Friday are people with chronic lung diseases that have developed pneumonia, obesity, hypertension, diabetes or who have immune systems weakened by other diseases.
