Five dengue cases reported

Chandigarh: Five confirmed dengue cases and eight suspected cases were reported at city government hospitals on Monday.

Dr MP Singh, spokesperson for Government Multispecialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, said that two positive dengue cases were reported from Khajeri and Hallo Majra. At Government Medical College Hospital-32, three positive cases were reported while eight others were being considered as suspected cases. Dengue virus is spread by Aedes aegypti mosquito that has previously bitten an infected person. The mosquito flourishes during rainy seasons but can breed in water-filled flower pots, plastic bags and cans year-round. TNN

AMU physician dies of dengue; threat of outbreak looms large

Aligarh, Oct 6 (PTI) A senior consultant at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) died of dengue here, AMU authorities said.Dr Meena Zaidi passed away at the Medical College yesterday, within forty eight of her developing high fever, they said.The physician''s death has set the alarm bells ringing in the University campus as well as in the city as reports of rise in the number of patients with high fever reach the district headquarters from different villages.Principal of J N Medical College Ashraf Malik told PTI "We have informed district health officials that the threat of an outbreak of dengue looms large in this region." "Each day about forty patients with high fever are being treated in our hospital. A number of such patients have displayed dengue-like symptoms," he said...

Pvt hosps report dengue death cases but TN shows no records​

CHENNAI: The state registry for vector-borne diseases, maintained by the Directorate of Public Health, shows that 296 people have tested positive for dengue in the city since January 2010, but there have been no deaths. However, several private hospitals say they have reported dengue cases and deaths to Chennai Corporation.

"We see three to four cases of dengue that require hospitalisation every week. We have lost some patients as well," said Dr B Ramachandran, who heads the intensive care unit of Kanchi Kamakoti Child's Trust Hospital.
"It's against our policy to make statistics public, but I can tell you that children from the age group of six months have died at our hospital due to dengue. We have regularly sent reports on all positive cases and deaths to the Corporation. We mention it as cause of death on the certificate that relatives use to register the death with the civic body," he said.​

Child dies, fear of dengue looms over Honnali

SHIMOGA: One-and-a-half year old child died at the Vaatsalya Hospital on Sunday morning due to suspected dengue fever.

According to sources in the hospital, the child was identified as Ajay of Honnali taluk in Davangere district.

The child was admitted on Saturday following severe illness and died around 9.40 a.m.

Dengue cases in Ahmedabad have increased 60% this year

Ahmedabad hospitals have recorded a steep rise in the number of dengue patients in the last ten months. Data available with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)'s health department suggests that this is the case when compared to previous year's records.

This year, the city's hospitals have registered 542 positive dengue cases from January to October, which in 2009 during the same period was 340. In 2009, a total 456 cases of dengue were registered (from January to December).
This year, September and October are being considered as dengue season as the period saw a steep rise of 152 and 140 positive cases respectively against 59 and 94 cases in 2009.

Moreover, the chief medical officer at the AMC, SP Kulkarni said the number of samples tested has also doubled in the past year. Last year, 1200 to 1300 samples were tested. This year,in ten months time, around 2500 samples were tested for confirmation of dengue cases.

The mosquito breeding survey for July- 2010 conducted by the AMC had suggested three times increase in the number of Aedes mosquitoes per room as compared to July 2009. In July 2009, there were around 0.35 Aedes mosquitoes in one room which increased to 0.98 per room in July 2010, suggests AMC records.

The mosquito causing malaria has reduced from 0.54 mosquitoes per room in 2009 to 0.38 mosquito per room in 2010.

"Rise in number of cases can be attributed to extended rainy season and increase in number of rainy days in the city. The months of September and October are the transmission period for dengue," said Kulkarni. He insisted that denizens should use repellant during the day to keep mosquitoes away as Aedes mosquitoes bite during day. He also said it is not advisable to keep water stagnant in buckets, ACs, water coolers and utensils.

6 more dengue cases detected in Muzaffarpur

Amit Kumar MUZAFFARPUR: Mohd Imtiaz (25), a plumber working in Mumbai, became so scared after catching dengue and plasma vivax malaria there that he air-dashed to Patna on Thursday and got himself examined there on Friday by a local doctor for treatment.

Imtiaz, belonging to Motipur in Muzaffarpur, had spent nearly Rs 25,000 in Mumbai over transfusion of blood platelet but without any relief, he told the doctor.

One more patient, Mohd Abdullah of Minapur, who had also returned from Mumbai with dengue and high fever and Lal Babu Paswan of Kundal area of Sikandarpur here also got themselves examined at the Bibiganj clinic of Dr N Kinjalk on Friday. All the three were confirmed as suffering from dengue.

Three more patients ? Amit Kumar of Bramhapura, Amod Kumar of Gobarsahi and Rahmat Ali of Mehdihassan Chowk ? had been examined by the same doctor five days ago and had been diagnosed with dengue. As such, six confirmed cases of dengue have been detected by a single physician and almost all the leading physicians of this town are treating dengue cases.
Dr Kinjalk said that the dengue patients are working as the reservoir of the disease which would spread by mosquitoes after biting them.

Dengue fever alert in Kannur

KANNUR: The District Medical Officer (DMO) here has urged the public to take precaution against dengue fever in the wake of the finding that 32 of the 119 suspected cases of dengue in the district were tested positive.
DMO R. Ramesh said at a press meet here on Saturday that the cases tested positive included four cases of death. As many as 20 more deaths from suspected dengue fever were also reported.
