Toll climbs to 16; nine patients on ventilator

Emergency wing of Gandhi Hospital converted into swine flu ward
Doctors, nurses working without proper protective equipment

HYDERABAD: The swine flu scenario in the State Capital continues to remain grim with hordes of H1N1 patients getting admitted to government and private hospitals. The toll due to swine flu has surged to 16 in the twin cities, even as nine more patients are on ventilator and are critical.
By Wednesday night, authorities confirmed 22 new H1N1 positive cases of which two doctors, one from Nizamabad and another from Warangal, have tested positive. With this, the total number of swine flu cases in the State is 377. Of the 22 positive, two are from Mahabubnagar while the rest are from the twin cities.
One suspected death of a woman due to swine flu at Gandhi Hospital is yet to be confirmed by the district health authorities. “The test results of the woman are yet to arrive. Public should visit screening centres within the first 24 hours,” DM&HO Ch. Jaya Kumari said.
The surge in swine flu deaths has led to a manifold increase in the inflow of patients to the outpatient wings of Gandhi, Osmania and Government Chest Hospitals. The severity of swine flu outbreak is such that the entire emergency wing of Gandhi Hospital was converted into a swine flu ward to accommodate the influx of patients. The Government Chest Hospital received over 250 patients in the outpatient wing with flu-like symptoms on Wednesday. A similar number of patients also visited the outpatient wings of Osmania and Gandhi Hospitals.
Till now, since the first swine flu case was reported in May, authorities have sent 770 samples for testing of which 377 have tested positive and 16 deaths confirmed.
Meanwhile, doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and P-G students of Gandhi and Osmania continue to work without any proper Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) and N95 masks. Doctors are using the three-layered masks, which are not enough for protection.
Four workers of the hospital, including a doctor and a nurse, had developed flu-like symptoms. “Their samples were sent for testing and the results are negative. We will get 100 PPE and N95 masks in a day,” Gandhi Hospital Superintendent E. A. Ashok Kumar said. :tiphat:http://www.hindu.com/2009/09/17/stories/2009091759360300.htm
