Mexico, February 7 .- Today, 25% of deaths occurring around the world are caused by an infectious disease, according to data published by Dr. Mario Henry Rodr?guez, Vicente Madrid-Marina and Humberto Lanz-Mendoza , researchers and officials from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP). Of this percentage of deaths, 90% is caused by six of these diseases, namely HIV / AIDS, tuberculosis, diarrhea, malaria, measles and pneumonia. In developing countries, other infectious agents such as human papilloma virus and hepatitis B and C are associated with certain malignancies.


In addition to the above, during the last two decades have emerged or re-emerged with increasing frequency, emerging infections (new), re-emerging (those that had been previously controlled) and resistant to antimicrobial agents as well as unpublished, as the coronavirus that causes SARS, due to various environmental factors, ecological, demographic, social and economic, among others, but, above all, to pathogens, especially those that affect humans and animals, undergo continuous genetic changes as result of biological selection pressures to which it is seized, as explained by Dr. Celso Ramos, another researcher at INSP.


Other infectious diseases that affect humans and have recently acquired great importance for its impact on public health are cervical cancer, associated with human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis, Lyme disease (borreliosis) legionellosis (Legionnaires disease), rickettsial, St. Louis encephalitis and hemorrhagic fevers caused by arenaviruses.


Globally, occurring around 300 million clinical cases of malaria, and more than a million fatalities, mostly in Africa. In Mexico, malaria has been a persistent disease from the forties, although through different strategies for prevention and control, has reduced the number of cases. However, other persistent diseases such as Chagas disease, and those infectious fungi and parasites such as leishmaniasis, leprosy and onchocerciasis, which have been largely neglected by health systems, deserve special attention, according to the following people suffering.


The resistance of parasites and mosquitoes to drugs and insecticides, respectively, may partly explain the persistence of this disease. Also, misuse and self-prescription of antibiotics, as well as the abuse of these in agriculture have led to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in a variety of pathogenic bacteria.

In addition to this, they have spread such diseases as West Nile virus, influenza, cholera and dengue fever as a result of two enormous new challenges: climate change and the process of globalization on health, which has facilitated the rapid spread of potentially epidemic pathogens.


On the other hand, currently available resources are very powerful and highly effective for information that can cope successfully with outbreaks or epidemics of infectious diseases under progress in the field of bioinformatics, molecular techniques, sequencing DNA, proteomics, and so marked, of deciphering the human genome not only, but of different pathogens


In Mexico, the epidemic of influenza A H1N1 that struck several regions of the world tested the ability of the country care and research in the field of public health, but also provided valuable insights into the magnitude, determinants and consequences of spread of infectious agents in biomedical and epidemiological evaluation and in regard to strategic planning and decision making with evidence-oriented policy development and regulation of infectious diseases, it is necessary to share, analyze and deepen.


Such knowledge, including, among others, the development and application of new technologies for the identification of immunogens that are used for vaccine development, to study the genetic epidemiology of tuberculosis and the design of new molecular diagnostic systems human papillomavirus, have revolutionized scientific research, helping to control outbreaks and epidemics of infectious agents in developing countries.


All this accounts for the need to study these diseases in the context of public health, both in its basic form and applied as an element indispensable for the generation of knowledge that can be changed from the behavior of health personnel and decision makers, to improvement in the infrastructure of health services, through the elements that make the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and recovery of patients and their family and social environment in the presence of the disease.


Limit the damage to the population's health depends on improving the opportunities of care, where the link between research, programs and activities of disease prevention and control is essential.


This is the reason that the attention and study of infectious diseases are part of daily INSP, through not only the activities and community work which is involved in the Center for Research on Infectious Diseases (CISEI) , which are designed to help reduce this kind of suffering, but of different lines of research by institutional mission, and particularly the training of human resources through both research and graduate programs in Epidemiology that the institution offers among its vast educational offerings.


And this is why, too, that the issue of infectious diseases substantive part of the scientific program of the XIV Congress of Public Health Research (CONGISP 2011), which will be held from 1 to 4 March this year Cuernavaca, Morelos, at the headquarters of National Public Health Institute with the participation of prestigious specialists from Mexico and the world.
