Thailand confirms new death from A(H1N1); Toll now 26

BANGKOK, July 16 (TNA) - Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on Thursday confirmed that a 21-year-old university student in Sriracha in the eastern seaboard province of Chonburi died from influenza A(H1N1), raising the country's fatality toll from the virus to 26.

The latest victim was a fourth year student of a well-known university in the seaside city of Sriracha. Her friend told reporters that she fell sick since June 22 and was admitted to the hospital on the same day.

Her condition was stable but she died on July 15. Her family said she had asthma as a congenital disease which may have contributed to her contracting the virus, leading to her death.

She was the fourth victim who died in the province and the second in Sriracha.(TNA)

Health Ministry confirms 25th flu victim

The Public Health Ministry reported the 25th death from H1N1 influenza and confirmed 412 new infections on Friday.

The total infections in Thailand have risen to 4,469, the ministry announced.

The latest victim was a 62-year-old woman living in Chumphon who weighed 125 kilogrammes. She had caught the virus from her relatives.

Dr Anu Thongdaeng of Paknam Chumphon Hospital said the woman had high blood pressure and was too fat. She died on Tuesday morning.

THAI executive board chairman Wallop Bhukkanasut said the flu scare had directly affected the airline industry.

The number of passengers from eastern Asian countries like China, Japan and Korea had plummeted by 15 to 20 per cent, forcing the airline to turn more to the European market, he said.

But deputy government spokesman Puttipong Punnakan said tourism increased during the five-day holiday last week, judging by the hotel occupancy rate.

He said the hotels reported occupancy rates had increased from 20 per cent to 40 per cent.
