838 New Patients With ILI, H1N1 Death Toll Remains At 77 People

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28(Bernama) -- No deaths were reported last week due to Influenza A (H1N1) leaving the death toll due to the disease so far to remain at 77 people.

However, a total of 838 new patients were hospitalised for influenza-like illness (ILI) while 884 cases were discharged (for ILI) last week.

As of Oct 24, a total of 465 ILI cases were still getting treatment at 66 hospitals nationwide,at four private hospitals.

"Of the ILI cases being treated, only 15 cases or three per cent were confirmed to be influenza A (H1N1) cases," said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican in a statement here Wednesday.

He said in the same period, six patients were admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) while four other patients were discharged from ICUs.

Commenting on the global situation, Dr Mohd Ismail said cases of Influenza A (H1N1) were on the rise in North America, Western Europe and East Asia while in the Southern Hemisphere, cases were declining.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The A/H1N1 flu is still active despite the absence of abnormality in Malaysia, a Malaysian official said on Thursday.

In fact, the Northern Hemisphere like North America, Canada, Western Europe and East Asia had shown increasing trend of the flu cases, Malaysian Health Director-General Ismail Merican said in a statement.

He said that although the surveillance conducted at 619 clinics nationwide did not record any flu-like illness cases, the people should not be ignorant of the pandemic.

As at Oct. 30, there were 446 flu-like illness patients in Malaysia receiving treatment at 49 hospitals nationwide with only 11 were tested positive for A/H1N1, said Ismail.

SPM candidates to take preventive measures

KUALA LUMPUR: Candidates for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination starting Nov 18 and invigilators have been urged to take preventive measures against Influenza A(H1N1).

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said parents should monitor their children's health while invigilators should separate those with Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and ask them to wear face masks.

He said candidates with ILI should inform parents fast to avoid problems and urged them to practice a healthy lifestyle and personal hygiene by cleaning the hands regularly with soap and water.

Some 587 new ILI patients were admitted to hospitals over the past one week while 557 were discharged.

"As of Nov 7, there were 332 ILI patients at 46 hospitals. Of the number, only 15 patients had positive Influenza A(H1N1)," Dr Ismail said in a statement here today.

Only one patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while four were under treatment due to risk factors; namely children under 5 years-old (2 cases), morbid obesity (1) and chronic diseases (1).

Influenza A(H1N1) deaths in the country stood at 77 people.

Two cases of cluster ILI were reported at SK LKTP Jerangau Barat, Hulu Terengganu, Terengganu and Kampung Lubuk Chupak, Bukit Sapi, Lenggong, Perak.

"Result of laboratory test on samples taken at random from SK LKTP Jerangau Barat, Hulu Terengganu showed positive H1N1."

Dr Ismail said monitoring on ILI cases at 619 sentinel clinics did not show any increase, with only 11 percent of the 818 samples received confirmed positive H1N1.- Bernama

Influenza A cluster reported at Pahang school

KUALA LUMPUR: An Influenza A(H1N1) cluster was reported at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya Bungor, Kuantan, last week, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said.

In a statement, he said the district health office had taken the necessary measures to address the matter.

Meanwhile, he said the death toll from H1N1 in the country remained at 77, with no new deaths reported.

Last week, 619 new patients were hospitalised with the influenza-like illness (ILI).

Up to November 14, 448 ILI cases were still being treated at 62 hospitals nationwide, he said.

On the global H1N1 situation, Dr Ismail said as at November 8, there were 503,536 confirmed H1N1 cases with 6,260 deaths in 206 countries.

He said the transmissions in the northern hemisphere countries such as North America, West Canada, Europe and Asia showed an unusual increase of ILI cases.

The surveillance in those countries showed that the percentage of the H1N1 virus detected was higher compared to seasonal influenza virus. -- BERNAMA

H1N1 reminder as schools prepare to reopen

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 – With the 2010 school session set to begin next week, the Health Ministry has come out with an advisory on Influenza A (H1N1) for all school children.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican today advised teachers and parents to ensure that pupils and students were in good health at all times.

They should monitor the health of the children at home and at school and seek medical treatment if any pupil or student showed symptoms of Influenza-like illness (ILI) or H1N1, he said in a statement.

“The H1N1 precautionary measures include referring pupils or students for treatment at the nearest clinic or hospital if they suffer from fever, cough or sore throat,” he said.

School children should wash their hands often with water and sanitiser, especially after coughing and sneezing, wear face masks if they have a cold, cough or sore throat, and refrain from going to public places to prevent spreading the virus to others, he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail said school children should use tissue paper or handkerchief when coughing or sneezing and discard the tissue paper in a trash bin and not share the handkerchief.

He also advised students of tertiary institutions to adopt similar precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease at these places.

Dr Mohd Ismail said that in the week ending Dec 26, a total of 348 fresh ILI patients were detected and admitted to hospital.

Two cases of H1N1, both children under five years of age, were under treatment in intensive care, he said. – Bernama
