TAIPEI (Taiwan News) ? The H1N1 swine flu virus has claimed its third Taiwanese fatality in a month, the nation?s 46th victim overall, the Centers for Disease Control announced Thursday.
As in the two previous cases, the latest victim is relatively young, CDC deputy chief Chou Chih-hau said. The 37-year-old man from Eastern Taiwan was preceded by a 21-year-old female university student and a 24-year-old man.
The new victim became ill early this month and sought medical treatment on July 19, Chou said. His situation sharply deteriorated on July 23 and he was taken into the intensive care unit the following day. He died on July 26 after his transfer to another hospital, according to Chou.
Of six members of the public having lived in close proximity to the patient, one began showing the symptoms of H1N1 and was taken to hospital on Wednesday, the CDC said.
Government data show that more than half of Taiwan?s swine flu virus fatalities, or 26 out of 46, were aged between 16 and 49. Only one of them had been vaccinated against H1N1, the CDC said.
The authorities cautioned people suffering from fever lasting more than three days to seek medical care. Other symptoms of the virus were coughing, throat and head ache, and a temperature of 38 degrees as measured in the ear, the CDC said.
