5 kids die of viral disease in Kaprada taluka

SURAT: Seven children belonging to a cluster of seven villages of Kaprada taluka in Valsad district have died due to a mysterious disease in the past 10 days. However, the district health department has confirmed only five deaths.
Panic has gripped the villages following which the district health department teams have rushed to the spots on Sunday. Four new cases of such illnesses were also found. The patients were admitted to the government hospital at Kaprada and their serum samples sent for tests.
As per the details available, many children of Tokerpada, Mani, Borpada, Keldha, Chinchpada, Nandgaon and Rahur suffered from an unknown viral fever. After struck by fever, they were under a severe cough attack and also developed blisters on the body. The affected also had nausea and loose motion.
Locals said seven children, including a teenager, have lost their life. However, the district health department has confirmed only five deaths. Official sources said those who had died were Roshni Umed of Mani village, a seven-month-old girl, Sahil Manshinath, a four-month-old boy from Chinchpada, Jyoti Saliya, a one-year-old girl of Tokarpada, Anil R Soma, a six-month-old boy of Nandgaon, and a 12-day-old boy from the same village.
MK Gajera, district health officer, told TOI, "Of the five deaths, one is due to diarrhoea, other four died because of viral fever." He also added, "There are 17 patients of viral fever from these villages and they are being treated. We have admitted four new patients on Sunday and our teams are working on the spot in the affected villages."
He said, "We have taken the serum samples of the newly admitted patients, who are all children below 10 years. They have been sent for testing to find out the type of viral fever that the patients were affected with."
Gajera said, "Dr Hitesh Patel, a government paediatrician, also travelled with us on Sunday."
At present, 22 workers and three medical officers are in the affected villages to treat the children. A survey is also being conducted in all the affected villages and wherever necessary patients are being given indoor treatment.
