One more swine flu death takes toll in city to 11

The city witnessed two back-to-back influenza H1N1 deaths with a 50-year-old housewife from Mulund succumbing on Wednesday. The patient, who was a known case of hypertension, had completed her five-day course of Tamiflu.

Kamal Ramchandran's death took the toll in the city due to swine flu to 11. She was admitted to Chetna Hospital in Mulund on August 27. A day after she was started on Tamiflu as she showed symptoms of the flu. Her throat swabs were collected and sent to Haffkine Research Institute at Parel on Saturday.

On Tuesday, she was shifted to the ICU of BYL Nair Hospital after her condition deteriorated. There is a 10-bed ICU specially setup at the Nair Hospital for swine flu patients. "When she was shifted to the Nair hospital, she had high fever and she had also developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome," said Dr Jairaj Thanekar, executive health officer, BMC. Thanekar added that she had been a patient of hypertension for the past 15 years. "She also had a cerebral stroke 12 years ago," said Thanekar. "She succumbed to H1N1 despite completing full course of Tamiflu," he said.

Patients going for screening, however, has come down. On Wednesday, 764 visited severalcentres for screening. So far, 799 people have tested positive for swine flu in the city. Anotherpatient admitted at the Nair Hospital is believed to be critical.

A 50-year-old woman died of swine flu here today, taking the death toll due to swine flu in the metropolis to 12. The countrywide toll is 106.

Kamal, a resident of suburban Mulund, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, Chetna, since August 27 before being shifted to civic-run Nair Hospital yesterday with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), officials said.

"The woman tested positive for swine flu and was on Tamiflu dose since August 28. She had 15-year-old history of hypertension and had cerebral stroke since last 12 years. She was brought in a critical condition to Nair Hospital," Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said.

Kamal was immediately transferred to Nair Hospital's ICU as she had developed severe health complications, she said.

MUMBAI: A day after a 25-year old woman died of swine flu, a 50-year-old Mulund resident succumbed to the disease on Wednesday evening, taking the
total number of H1N1 casualties in the city to 11. Kamal Ramchandran, a resident of Shanti Nagar, who was suffering from chronic hypertension, died of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) at Nair hospital, taking the city toll to 11.

The victim had a history of high blood pressure since the last 15 years. She had also suffered a cerebral stroke 12 years ago. According to civic officials, Ramchandran was first treated at Chetana Hospital in Mulund, where she was admitted on August 27. Doctors there said she had already developed multiple organ failure.

"Before coming to us, she took treatment from Mulund's Hira Mongi Hospital for high fever and breathlessness for a day. She had developed ARDS and most of her organs had been affected by then. Without wasting any time, we put her on ventilator. We suspected swine flu and started a dose of Tamiflu the next day,'' said Dr Durandar Katke, who was treating her.

The following day, her throat samples were sent for inspection. On Monday, her results came and confirmed that she had swine flu. "As soon as the reports came in, we referred her to the ICU of Nair Hospital,'' Dr Katke added.

Civic officials said that she was already in bad shape when she was brought to Nair Hospital. "Since she was a chronic patient of hypertension, she was badly affected. Patients with hypertension are most vulnerable to swine flu,'' said Dr Jairaj Thanekar, civic executive health officer. "She had, however, completed the five day course of Tamiflu. We will now carry out contact tracing and dispense a dose of Tamiflu to them,'' he added.

Meanwhile, 764 people were screened at various centres in the city and six throat swabs were taken. Eight swine flu suspects were admitted and 14 tested positive.
