6-Year-Old Dies Of Rocky Mtn. Spotted Fever Updated: Thursday, June 13 2013, 06:27 PM EDT Not long ago, Emilee Russell finished Kindergarten and had so much to look forward to. Her teacher at Black Mountain Primary says sudden illness took her prized pupil away. She died Wednesday of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever after being bit by a tick while visiting family in Texas. She passed away at Louisiana State University Hospital.

Firefighters and the Black Mountain community learned this week that Emilee died after becoming sick during a family vacation in Texas.

Doctors suspect her death may have been the result of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Jones said.

Jones said Emilee died Wednesday at a hospital in Louisiana. She was treated at three different facilities as doctors tried to figure out what was wrong, according to posts on the Fire Department Facebook page.

Jones said the child apparently suffered a tick bite May 27...

It's not clear to me if the tick bite happened in her home state of NC, or while vacationing in TX where she got ill. There have been undiagnosed deaths of 2 teens in southeast TX recently and atypical presentation of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever was mentioned as a possibility:

This article reports that Emilee Russell was bitten in Texas, not in North Carolina before leaving home.

A six-year-old girl has died from the infection caused by a tick bite. She was vacationing in Texas over the Memorial Day weekend when she was bitten.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness has increased during the last decade, but during the same time period, fatalities have actually decreased...
