Fifth person with swine flu dies in NT

A fifth person with swine flu has died in the Northern Territory, health authorities say.

The woman, aged in her early 40s, had a number of serious medical conditions as well as the H1N1 influenza virus, the NT Health Department said in a statement.

She was admitted to hospital on July 22 but died in Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) on Saturday night.

"RDH (staff) express sympathy to the bereaved family for their sad loss," the statement said.

There are currently 17 patients in RDH with swine flu, including three people in intensive care.

The NT Centre for Disease Control on Monday warned pregnant women and anyone with underlying chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, lung, heart and kidney disease, and Aboriginal people, to take extra care.

A 21-month-old boy with swine flu has died in the Northern Territory, health authorities say.

He is the sixth person to die in the region with the H1N1 influenza virus.

In a statement, the NT Health Department said the child had died earlier this week at Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH).

"In consideration of family privacy, no further details will be released," the statement said.

"The hospital has expressed sympathy to the bereaved family for their sad loss."

In addition to swine flu, the boy also had other serious underlying medical conditions, the Health Department said.

The last person to die with H1N1 influenza was a woman aged in her early 40s.

She was admitted to hospital on July 22 but died in RDH on August 17.
