N.K. denies rumors on bird flu outbreak: report

SEOUL, June 10 (Yonhap) --

North Korea has denied rumors that avian influenza or hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is spreading in the country, a radio report said Tuesday.

The North's heath authorities notified the World Health Organization (WHO) that there has been no single case of bird flu or HFMD reported to the authorities this year, the Washington-based Radio Free Asia said.

The denial came in response to a report published a week ago by South Korean aid group Good Friends, claiming that a mysterious epidemic suspected to be bird flu or HFMD has been spreading in North Korean towns bordering China.

The disease has already taken the lives in recent months of many North Korean infants already suffering from malnutrition caused by food shortages, the group claimed, citing unnamed North Korean doctors in the border area.

The WHO has rendered technical and monetary support to North Korea to help prevent possible bird flu outbreaks since the communist state was hit by the deadly disease in 2005.

No new case has been reported since then.

Jai Narain, the director for communicable diseases at the WHO's Southeast Asia office in New Delhi, was quoted as saying that the international body is working closely with the North Korean health authorities to prevent any potential bird flu outbreak and Pyongyang has submitted related reports to the organization on a regular basis.

The France-based OIE, the world organization for animal health, also said the North's latest report to the office included no information or reports of any bird flu outbreaks, the radio reported.

North Korea has inoculated poultry against bird flu to prevent the spread of the virus from neighboring South Korea, according to the North's state-run news media.

South Korea has slaughtered over 8 million birds since early April when bird flu broke out there for the first time in more than a year. But no South Korean has died of bird flu.

HFMD, meanwhile, has struck over 10,000 people resulting in 26 fatalities, all of them children, in recent months, according to Chinese media reports.

An unidentified disease is currently spreading in the natioanl border regions, and this has the health authority (보건당국) extremely anxious.

On May 22nd in Musan, North Hamkyong Province, people began to suffer and collapse from the unidentified disease, which caused pulmonary tuberculosis, scabies(옴병), and high temperature.

This disease, which has been going by the name of high fever ('열병'), is spreading among children under the age of six, and especially quickly among children living in the day care centers(탁아소).

Because of this disease, children are unable to swallow even a grain of food and can only drink water.

Hospital staffs say children area still conscious, but their pulse is very faint.

The mortality rate for children under two years of age who contract this disease is virtually 100%.

Residents of Musan are filled with terror and are saying that "the Arduous March has finally reappeared and the same situation is happening once again." During the Arduous March, people were helpless because of long periods of no food and different diseases, and many people died.

Frustration on Diagnosing Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease or Bird Flu
Undiagnosed symptoms have spread through out the border area and the government is yet to determine whether the disease is the bird-flu. A doctor in Musan County hospital admitted by saying, ?It is the Bird-Flu, it?s spreading among the children at this stage not to adults yet. The government is trying to seek the cause for the disease?.

On the April 27, a doctor in a hospital in the city of Hoeryung stated that, ?it?s true that the Bird-Flu is spreading. Patients? symptoms are such as over 38℃ of high fever, losing appetite and coughs with dried throat and 5-6 children are dying per day. These symptoms are common among children, the doctors are saying, ?Five in every ten are dying.? Another doctor is saying that, ?I think the Bird- Flu accompanying with the SARS, we are just feeding Gimchi(김치) rather than any other medicine.

Other opinions are expressed on these symptoms that this is the Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease(HFMD;수족구병) from China. The health authority in Sinuiju has put out the sign saying? We shall put out the HFMD by enhancing the quarantine?. After the announcement that on the May 20, And a doctor in Sinuiju say that,? I would need to diagnose myself, but I think this is the foot and mouth disease. The diseases may have spread among the homeless (Kkotjebis) through North Hamgyung Province, since I?ve heard the diseases have spread from Beijing, Jangchung, Yanji and Longjing. Usual symptoms are with ulcers and high fever. This is easily contagious among children and the North Korean government is in another determination.

Two things still bother me about this - HFMD in China didn't have as high a CFR as this apparently has, and it doesn't seem like HFMD should seem take this long to dx. I think one report said these deaths started at the end of April.

Is it because it only is affecting children that people are saying HFMD? How do we know that BF won't progress this way? Family units first, then children-to-children, (then maybe young adults - documented in other pandemics), then general public??? I mean it wasn't like we had the ability to track past pandemics in the early stages. Do we really know?

One thing is could also be is a completely new type of disease also the starvation of people is really high people said. it makes their immune systems weak.
