Swine flu spreads to Turkey?s east

As the first batch of swine flu vaccines arrives in Turkey, the H1N1 virus shows signs of spreading. Eight people in two provinces in Southeast Turkey have been diagnosed with the disease

The pandemic H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu, has been detected in two provinces in Southeast Turkey Seven people at four schools in Diyarbakır and one person in Erzurum have been diagnosed with the disease.

Earlier a swine flu outbreak at Bilkent University Preparatory School in Ankara caused alarm in the capital and the Health Ministry closed the primary school for one week after several students were diagnosed. The closures were made in an effort to prevent the spread of the flu to other students. The Health Ministry announced late Sunday that the number of cases in the capital reached 41 in the last five days.

Following Ankara, seven people were diagnosed with swine flu in four schools in Diyarbakır. A statement released by the governor?s office on Monday said seven people including five students were diagnosed with swine flu in the province. Four schools, where the five students tested positive, are closed for five days as of Monday.

The Health Ministry said the number of people diagnosed with H1N1 virus in Turkey so far is 551.

Vaccines arrive

Meanwhile, another person tested positive for swine flu in the eastern province of Erzurum. Officials said a 35-year-old patient was infected with the virus in the Czech Republic.

Moreover, the first batch of swine flu vaccines reached Turkey on Sunday. The Health Ministry officials said the 500,000 doses were brought to Istanbul. The ministry said the vaccines, which were ordered from Novartis, were sent from Italy.

The vaccines are scheduled to arrive in Ankara on Monday. Ministry officials said the vaccines would be tested in the ministry?s Refik Saydam Hıfzısıhha Center for five to 20 days, and then distributed to health institutions if viable.

The ministry said as a first step health personnel would also be vaccinated.

This will be Novartis adjuvanted vaccine containing MF59 (squalene based).
