A/H1N1 swine influenza with bacteria worsens

Despite the apparent end of the worldwide panic over swine flu, the disease still inspires care, since it is a little known virus.
A study in the journal PLoS One, done by researchers in the U.S. and Argentina, takes one more step to try to explain why the disease is harmless to some and deadly for others.
According to the researchers, one possibility is the action of the H1N1 virus and the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae.
The presence of two villains in the microscopic organism from the same patients may be behind the initial violence that hit Argentina's disease, suggests a team led by Gustavo Palacios, Columbia University (USA).
After all, although the first case of disease has been registered in the country until 17 May 2009, two months later had 3056 cases and 137 deaths - a mortality rate of 4.5%, considered a bit high on the common for seasonal influenza.
Palacios and company examined samples of 199 cases Argentine, looking for signs of other microbes in the body of patients.
They found that Streptococcus pneumoniae was present in 56.4% of severe cases, against only 25% of mild cases. And the harmful effects of the bacteria appeared to be greater in patients who were not among the groups at risk of disease.
