Edmonton faces outbreak in influenza cases, low staff immunization rates

The city is dealing with an outbreak of influenza, with 60 cultured cases of flu confirmed in a lab and ?several dozens more? reported over the last few days, according to Alberta Health officials.

Several outbreaks have happened in local institutions, including the Misericordia Hospital, where AHS officials say only 20 per cent of staff have had the flu shot.

?This is the start of the season. We expect things to gradually get more and more intense but?we the population still have the opportunity to protect ourselves,? said Dr. Chris Sikora on Friday.

Alberta Health Services confirms one H1N1 death in Edmonton and one death in Calgary

Alberta Health Services (AHS) confirmed one H1N1 death in Edmonton and one in Calgary Tuesday afternoon.

The deaths come at a time where influenza cases have doubled in the last week.

AHS chief medical health officer Dr. Gerry Predy says the number of lab-confirmed influenza cases has risen from 65 last week to 125 this week.

"These are only lab-confirmed cases, so these are really on the tip of the ice berg -- generally most people who have the flu don't get a lab test," said Predy.

However, Predy says the number of cases aren't unusual, rather it's the severity of the cases that is causing alarms.
