It isn't unusual for the Arabic press to report on `suspected bird flu' cases in Egypt. Over the past year, thousands of suspect cases have been hospitalized and tested, but only about 50 have tested positive for the H5N1 virus.


Today, the Arabic press is reporting on 17 suspect human cases at a poultry farm in Sohag where chickens reportedly tested positive for the avian flu virus.


Tests are being conducted, and hopefully we'll get more information over the next couple of days. For now, these are only suspected cases.

Watching Egypt Again

Egypt hasn't reported a human case of H5N1 infection since April of this year, when a 2 year-old male child from Al-Honsaynya, Sharkea Governorate was diagnosed with the disease. He was the 50th confirmed human case in Egypt ( where there have been 22 fatalities).


From time to time the Arabic press carries stories of suspected human infections, which thankfully, most of the time turn out to be false alarms. Over the past couple of years, literally thousands of people have been tested for the virus, with only 50 positive results.


Today, after a long quiet spell, at least one Egyptian newspaper is reporting on a group of suspected cases.

These are, of course, unconfirmed cases, and testing is pending. Most of these cases, even those that are reported in the local press, have tested negative in the past.

We'll have to wait and see about these.

A New Suspect Human Case In Egypt?

Egypt hasn't reported a human infection from the H5N1 bird flu virus since last April. The official number of cases in Egypt has remained at 50 - with 22 fatalities - since that time.


Today, there are several reports in the Arabic press that strongly intimate that they have detected a new human case - that of a 45 year-old woman who has been hospitalized and given Tamiflu.

No official announcement has been made by Egyptian authorities nor is there any update on their Bird Flu site as of this posting.

The Health Ministry's Bird Flu page is woefully out of date, with the statistics page still reporting only 36 human cases to date.

Given the vagaries of machine translations, and the lack of official confirmation - despite the newspapers calling this the 51st case - we probably need to consider this a suspect case.


Hopefully we'll get more detailed information, including test results, from the Egyptian authorities soon.

A possible Return of the H5N1

I remember from few months ago the ministry of Health and the WHO announced that Egypt is no longer in the H5N1 danger zone , we were not hot spot anymore then. We believed that thanks to the fact that there were no infection cases but it seems that we can be wrong because yesterday it was announced officially that 45 years old housewife "Huda Noah" from Gharbia "Nile Delta" was suspected to have H5N1 . She is currently in the Hospital waiting for the tests results to say if she is H5N1 Positive or Negative , hopefully insh Allah it will be Negative and it is just strong cold

The problem is that Gharbia suffered a lot from the H5N1

The upshot appears to be, while everyone it talking about this suspect case, no one has yet to confirm it as being H5N1. There are, after all, other possibilities besides bird flu.

Thousands of suspect cases have been hospitalized and have been tested for the virus in Egypt over the past two years.

To date, of those, only 50 people have tested positive.

CAIRO, May 20 (Reuters) - Two Egyptian boys have contracted the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus, bringing the total number of cases in the most populous Arab country to 74, state news agency MENA said on Wednesday.

Egypt, hit harder by bird flu than any other country outside Asia, has seen a surge in cases in recent weeks with 14 new human infections and four deaths reported since April 1 -- more than the country saw in all of 2008.

The children -- a 4-year-old boy from Daqahlia in the Nile Delta and a 3-year-old boy from Sohag in the south -- were admitted to hospital with high fever and were in a stable condition after being treated with Tamiflu, MENA said.

It quoted a health ministry spokesman as saying that both boys had been in contact with birds suspected of being infected with the disease.

The new infections came just days after a 4-year-old girl died of the virus on Monday. Overall, 27 Egyptians have died after contracting the virus.

Egypt has recently substantially increased their surveillance for possible bird/swine flu cases (see Meanwhile, Back In Egypt . . .).

It is difficult to know how much of this sharp increase in reported cases can be attributed to an increase in infections, and how much is due to enhanced surveillance.

Egyptian Media Reporting 80th Bird Flu Case

On Friday, Egyptian media reported on their 28th confirmed case of H5N1 bird flu for the year.

Two days later, on Sunday, they reported yet another case, their 80th to date, and 29th for 2009.

In 2008, Egypt only detected 8 human infections with the virus.

This sharp rise in the number of cases, plus a sharply reduced mortality rate, has some scientists wondering whether the virus is changing in Egypt.

Whether this jump in cases is as prominent as it seems, or if some of this rise stems from better surveillance and reporting, is unknown.
