In Afghanistan, the health ministry has warned two critical weeks lie ahead as the war-torn country recorded its biggest one-day rise of new coronavirus cases, triggered by a continued surge of transmission in Kandahar.

Over the past 24 hours, 172 new cases were confirmed, bringing to total number of infections to 1,703. Of the new cases, 27 were confirmed in the country’s capital, Kabul, pushing the total number of infections 479 in what has become Afghanistan’s worst affected area. A lockdown is being implemented in Kabul in a bid to contain spread of the virus.

KABUL, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan on Thursday reported 232 new confirmed COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 2,171, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health.

The ministry said in a statement that the new coronavirus cases, the highest daily increase since the outbreak of the pandemic in mid-February, were registered in 10 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces.

Three COVID-19 male patients, two in western Herat province and one in national capital Kabul, died during the period, taking the national death toll to 64, according to the statistics of the ministry.

KABUL, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Friday reported 215 new COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours, taking the total cases to 3,778.

The ministry said in a statement that four COVID patients were discharged from hospitals across the country during the period, bringing to 472 the number of patients who recovered from the disease.

Three COVID patients died since early Thursday, bringing the death toll to 109.
