HYDERABAD: Is the dreaded swine flu back? Over the last few days, many patients including those suffering from pneumonia, made a beeline to the Chest Hospital to check whether they had swine flu symptoms. Though no positive case has been reported in the city in the past three months, doctors have kept their fingers crossed. With swine flu leading to deaths of 10 persons in the previous two summers, doctors have advised people to take all precautionary measures.

?Every season, 10 per cent of the population is affected with common flu but it would a cause for worry if the number rose to 25-30 percent. We need a database of people affected with swine flu in the twin cities to check for any unusual outbreak,? said Dr SV Prasad, superintendent, Government Chest Hospital. He added that at least four to six patients, suffering from pneumonia had approached the hospital suspecting swine flu symptoms.

The only good news is so far denizens have not been hit by swine flu though several persons in neighbouring states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Kerala are suffering from the disease. Hyderabad district health and medical officials special medical staff and testing centres have been made available in various areas of the twin cities.

Woman tests positive for swine flu


HYDERABAD: A 52-year-old woman tested positive for swine flu on Tuesday. Hailing from Bellary, Karnataka, she is under treatment at a private hospital in Malakpet.

State health authorities said that she had come for a check up complaining of fever and had got admitted at the hospital on Sunday. She tested positive for the virus on Tuesday. Authorities said that her health condition is stable now.

AP: Monsoon brings back swine flu


HYDERABAD: Confirming the fears of medical experts that swine flu could be back this rainy season, two women, including a pregnant, tested positive for the H1N1 virus in the State capital on Wednesday. ?They are the first positive cases since the onset of the monsoon,? Dr BL Veena Kumari, district medical and health officer, told Express.

One of the women, a 45-year-old from Bellary was admitted to the swine flu ward of a private hospital on June 13 with symptoms like severe fever, cough and cold. The other patient, a pregnant from Tandur, was being treated in another private hospital.

Dr K Subhakar, state coordinator, swine flu, said there was no indication of how lethal swine flu could become. ?During the rainy and winter seasons, swine flu spreads faster. Every season, 10 per cent of the population is affected by common flu but it would be a cause of concern if the number rises to 25-30 per cent,? he said.� However, Veena Kumari asserted there was no need to panic. According to her, people need to be more vigilant and take precautionary measures. Elaborating on the steps being taken to check the spread of swine flu, she said surveillance and screening were a high priority.� ?Special medical staff and testing centres are made available in different parts of the twin cities. Health centres had been alerted to stock up medicines,? she said.

HYDERABAD: With doctors warning of possible swine flu outbreak in the twin cities, patients suffering from flu-like symptoms like fever, cold and cough made a beeline at the Government Chest hospital on Thursday, to get themselves scanned for swine flu. Dr K Subhakar, state chief coordinator, swine flu said the disease does spread faster during cooler weather in monsoon and winter. “As far as the twin cities are concerned, there have been two positive cases reported so far. But the virus could change its behaviour quickly. Therefore, we could see more infections due to the cool conditions,” he added. “Doctors must have a database of swine flu patients in the state and in the twin cities to check against any unusual outbreak,’’ said duty doctors at the hospital. They added that every season 10 percent of the population gets affected by common flu but if the number rises to 25-30 percent, then it could be a cause for concern.

Dr Meera Bai, superintendent, Fever Hospital said that sufficient staff and stocks of medicines are available to cope up with any emergency situation.� The district medical and health officials have released 80,000 doses of vaccines and the entire medical staff of government hospitals will be vaccinated. Besides, officials have alerted the Rajiv Gandhi International airport officials to scan passengers thoroughly. They have also asked school managements to keep premises clean and dry during monsoon.

Area hospitals to collect swab samples

July 29: The Hyderabad district medical and health officer, Dr B.L. Veena Kumari, said that the woman suffering from swine flu is being treated at the Jubilee Hills Apollo Hospital. ?She tested positive for H1N1. Her husband and son are being given preventive medication,? Dr Kumari said. In January, a girl who returned to the city after visiting Britain tested positive and later two more cases were reported, one of a person from Raichur and the other from Bellary in Karnataka, both seeking treatment here.

The state health department has set up sample collection centres at the Chest Hospital at Erragadda, Gandhi and Osmania hospitals and the area hospitals in Vanasthalipuram, Kondapur, Malakpet and King Koti. ?When cold, fever and running nose don?t subside in three days despite being treated, seek medical advice and get treated,? Dr Venna Kumari said. ?The H1N1 virus affects the respiratory system. The patient will exhibit serious breathing problems at the terminal stage of the disease. Patients who have doubts ought to approach the area hospitals,? the medical and health officer said.

Fourth case of swine flu in city

HYDERABAD: It seems the monsoon has brought back the dreaded swine flu! With a fresh swine flu case reported, Hyderabad district medical and health officials have directed superintendents of government hospitals and health centres to take precautionary measures to prevent outbreak of the disease.

Dr BL Veena Kumari, District Medical and Health officer said, ?A 40-year-old housewife from Maredpally was admitted in a private hospital with severe fever, cold and cough on July 25.

Suspecting her symptoms, a few samples were collected and sent to the Institute of Preventive Medicine and they tested positive for swine flu.? She added that the woman is undergoing treatment and a specially constituted team of doctors have also done tests on her family members as a precautionary measure.

?We are suggesting people to wear a mask or cover their face when they go out, since the virus spreads faster during the wet weather,? Veena Kumari said. This is the fourth case of swine flu to be reported this year.

One swine flu case reported in AP


Hyderabad, Aug 23 (PTI) One case of swine flu has been reported in the city, health officials said today. The patient, who had been admitted with symptoms of swine flu on August 18 at Gandhi Hospital here, tested positive for H1N1 and is currently undergoing treatment, they said. Meanwhile, State Coordinator for H1N1, Dr K Subhakar said swine flu was no more a problem in Andhra Pradesh. PTI COR VKV
