Antibiotics increase the epidemic

> The National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER) found that some patients have died of influenza A H1N1 and others who are in serious condition took antibiotics for several types attack the virus. Avail them not only delayed his arrival to health services and receiving antivirals.

The director of INER, Rogelio Perez Padilla said that patients themselves have self-medication, but also said there are doctors who prescribed.

"First of all antibiotics are useless for the flu, then one of the things that is observed when they are seriously ill patients who used including several antibiotics, and not a kilo of them going to do anything against the virus, antivirals not serve for bacteria, "he said.

He warned that the only thing that is taking these drugs causes a false sense of confidence, because we think that that will combat the disease and thus postpones visit to the doctor.

In fact, most of the 24 critically ill patients who are admitted to the INER with confirmed diagnosis of influenza AH1N1 previously taken antibiotics.

"Most people who become infected with influenza do not seek medical service, and is normal for any disease. Self-care are reasonable, but in relation to influenza is important that patients are not circulated to others who are not sick.

"From the relevant data are very consistent in hospitalized patients, who are precisely those with the greatest seriousness, is that often had received antibiotics sometimes several in a few days, which makes no sense," he said.

Referring to the situation facing the INER before the outbreak of new viruses every day stated that consultation are reaching 120 people, but only a small proportion are suspected of having influenza and even less on an outpatient

But 80 of the 178 beds that has the hospital are occupied by patients of AH1N1.

In this context, the officer asked the population not to reach any point before the outbreak of the disease: "Do not think that is something we are going to fall dead into the street, but I think we can give confidence to any disease. We must maintain the precautionary measures. "

Antonio Pascual Feria, president of the National Association of Pharmacies of Mexico (Anafarmex), meanwhile, assured that there will be supply of antivirals and supplies during the winter season and in pharmacies across the country will be applying for decapacitaci?n preventive undispositivo losmedicamentos supply manejoy.

Re: Antibiotics increase the epidemic

why does it "increase the epidemic" ?
Are they more likely to shed virus ?
More likely to go back to work/school too early ?

Re: Antibiotics increase the epidemic

I take it to mean that these patients are mingling with the general population for a longer period of time and therefore spreading the virus to more people. With a false sense of security, they are unlikely to be using appropriate precautions to prevent viral spread. I don't think antibiotics themselves are impacting on viral spread, other than giving a false sense of security and delaying appropriate antiviral treatment.

Re: Antibiotics increase the epidemic

I don't get it. If there is evidence of bacterial co-infection that increases the severity and outcome, why would antibiotics not be advisable, either as a prophylactic when a viral infection is almost certainly to happen or as a valid treatment immediately after the virus infection starts?

In other words, pnuemoccus resides in nearly everyone. And the outcome from coinfection with H1 is severe, says CDC. And H1 is very prevalent in the population. So why not use an antibiotic to combat the pnuemo bacteria now, hopefuly making the outcome from the H1 less severe?

"S. pneumoniae is a transient member of the normal flora, colonizing the nasopharynx of up to 40% of healthy adults and children with no adverse effects. Children carry this pathogen in the nasopharynx asymptomatically for about 4-6 weeks, often several serotypes at a time. New serotypes are acquired approximately every 2 months. Serotypes 6, 14, 18, 19, and 23 are the most prevalent, accounting for 60-80% of infections depending on the area of the world. Pneumococcal infection accounts for more deaths than any other vaccine-preventable bacterial disease" :Textbook of Bacteriology

Re: Antibiotics increase the epidemic

I would argue, that those who take antibiotics are more concerned
and take it more serious than average and thus less likely to mingle.

I read some reports here that people go to work earlier
the second time they have it.

Re: Antibiotics increase the epidemic

My reading of it (in Spanish too) is that antibiotics are being taken IN PLACE OF Tamiflu and antivirals, which is resulting in a delay in treatment, and worse outcomes. Note the mention of "postpone visits to the doctor" - I believe these antibiotics are being taken without medical supervision.

Re: Antibiotics increase the epidemic

Many people believe they are no longer contagious soon after they start antibiotic treatment and are therefore less likely to follow precautions. As well, in many countries, antibiotics are available over the counter. I think that is the case in Mexico. Many people start antibiotic treatment at the first sign of a cold. That doesn't mean they are going to be more diligent about looking after themselves.

It is not recommended that healthy people take antibiotic therapy with viral infections. Side effects and the potential for antibiotic resistance usually outweigh the benefits of treatment. There is no place for prophylactic antibiotic treatment in healthy people. People at high risk, particularly those with chronic lung disease, are often advised to start antibiotic therapy at the first sign of respiratory infection. For them, the benefit outweighs the risk.

On the other hand, those who deteriorate after a viral infection may well have a secondary bacterial infection and , for them, antibiotics may be appropriate.

Re: Antibiotics increase the epidemic

Antibiotics also kill probiotics, thereby eliminating this beneficial part of the immune system.
