Summary on week 23

  • Overall influenza activity has remained at low levels in most parts of the world.
  • In Northern Hemisphere the number of influenza type B virus detections exceeded that of influenza A.
  • However, the detection of influenza A increased in South Hemisphere with the proportion of A(H3N2) increasing and exceeding that of the pandemic A(H1N1)

Global Virological Surveillance - 25 June 2010

Influenza B viruses continued to be predominating in some countries and areas of Northern Hemisphere, including China (69.8% of all influenza detections), Russian Federation (93.7%). Sporadic influenza B activity has also been observed in some other countries.

Sporadic influenza A activity was reported in some countries in the AFRO region, including Cameroon, Kenya and Madagascar, with the proportion of A(H3N2) increasing (15%).


FluNet Report

The total number of specimens reportedly positive for influenza viruses by National Influenza Centres (NICs) from 23 countries was 288. Of these, 88 (30.6%) were typed as influenza A and 200 (69.4%) as influenza B.

From the start of the pandemic in 19 April 2009 to 12 June 2010, the total number of specimens reported positive for influenza by NIC laboratories was 643,702*. Of these, 488,740 (75.9%) were pandemic A(H1N1), 8,915 (1.4%) were seasonal A(H1N1), 32,630 (5.1%) were A(H3N2), 80,620(12.5%) were A (not subtyped) and 32,678(5.1%) were influenza B.

The majority of pandemic A(H1N1) 2009 influenza viruses analyzed to date are antigenically and genetically closely related to the recommended vaccine virus A/California/7/2009.

Summary on week 24

  • Overall influenza activity has remained at low levels in most parts of the world.
  • In Northern Hemisphere the number of influenza type B virus detections exceeded that of influenza A.
  • However, the detection of influenza A increased in South Hemisphere with the co-circulation of A(H1N1)2009 pandemic virus and seasonal A(H3N2).

Global Virological Surveillance

Influenza B viruses continued to be predominating in some countries and areas of Northern Hemisphere, including China (69.7% of all influenza detections) and Russian Federation (86.7%). Sporadic influenza B activity has also been observed in some other countries.

Sporadic influenza A activity was reported in some countries in the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, Brazil, Chile and South Africa.

The proportion of A(H3N2) increased in Australia and South Africa while A(H1N1)2009 pandemic virus was reported as predominant virus in Brazil and Chile.


FluNet Report

The total number of specimens reportedly positive for influenza viruses by National Influenza Centres (NICs) from 20 countries was 218. Of these, 117 (53.7%) were typed as influenza A and 101 (46.3%) as influenza B.

From the start of the pandemic in 19 April 2009 to 19 June 2010, the total number of specimens reported positive for influenza by NIC laboratories was 644,883*. Of these, 489,229 (75.9%) were pandemic A(H1N1), 8,923 (1.4%) were seasonal A(H1N1), 32,897 (5.1%) were A(H3N2), 80,669(12.5%) were A (not subtyped) and 33,046(5.1%) were influenza B.

  • In the Northern Hemisphere the number of influenza type B virus detections exceeded that of influenza A.
  • In the Southern Hemisphere, there is an observation of increasing number of influenza A virus detections with co-circulation of pandemic A(H1N1) and seasonal A(H3N2) viruses.

Global Virological Surveillance

At low levels, influenza B viruses continued to be predominating in some countries and areas of Northern Hemisphere, including China (69.3% of all influenza detections) and Russian Federation (93.7%). Sporadic influenza B activity has also been observed in some other countries.

Sporadic influenza A activity was reported in some countries in the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, Brazil and South Africa. The proportion of A(H3N2) increased in South Africa (53% of all detections) while pandemic A(H1N1) virus was reported as predominant in Brazil (93.8%). In Australia the proportion of co-circulation of pandemic A(H1N1) and seasonal A(H3N2) viruses is very similar (58.3% and 41.7% of all detection, respectively).

The total number of specimens reportedly positive for influenza viruses by National Influenza Centres (NICs) from 29 countries was 356. Of these, 194 (54.5%) were typed as influenza A and 162 (45.5%) as influenza B.

From the start of the pandemic in 19 April 2009 to 26 June 2010, the total number of specimens reported positive for influenza by NIC laboratories was 647,378*. Of these, 490,415 (75.8%) were pandemic A(H1N1), 8,946 (1.4%) were seasonal A(H1N1), 33,509 (5.2%) were A(H3N2), 80,737(12.5%) were A (not subtyped) and 33,645(5.2%) were influenza B.

  • Overall influenza activity has remained at low levels in most parts of the world.
  • In the Southern Hemisphere, increasing number of influenza A virus detections have been reported with co-circulation of pandemic A(H1N1) and seasonal A(H3N2) viruses.
  • Influenza type B virus detections have decreased.

Global Virological Surveillance

Overall influenza activity has remained low with detection of 54.6% pandemic influenza A(H1N1) of influenza A viruses subtyped globally. Sporadic influenza A activity was reported in some countries, including Australia, Brazil, China and Singapore with co-circulation of pandemic A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) viruses. In Australia, the proportion of pandemic A(H1N1) (88.9 %) was significantly higher than seasonal A(H3N2) viruses (11.1%). Brazil reported sporadic pandemic A(H1N1) detections. Sporadic influenza B activity has been observed in some countries with decreased detections in China (56.9% of all influenza detections).


FluNet Report

The total number of specimens reportedly positive for influenza viruses by National Influenza Centres (NICs) from 24 countries was 308. Of these, 181 (58.8%) were typed as influenza A and 127 (41.2%) as influenza B.

From the start of the pandemic in 19 April 2009 to 3 July 2010, the total number of specimens reported positive for influenza by NIC laboratories was 648,936*. Of these, 490,566 (75.6%) were pandemic A(H1N1), 8,946 (1.4%) were seasonal A(H1N1), 34,610 (5.3%) were A(H3N2), 80,839 (12.5%) were A (not subtyped) and 33,848(5.2%) were influenza B.

Overall influenza activity has remained low. Globally 69,1% of the subtyped influenza A viruses were pandemic influenza A(H1N1). Influenza A activity was reported in some countries, including Australia, Chile, China, Ghana, Singapore and South Africa with co-circulation of pandemic A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) viruses. Sporadic influenza B activity has been observed in some countries with decreased detections in China (46.8% of all influenza detections).


FluNet Report (For the week 4 July to 10 July 2010)

The total number of specimens reportedly positive for influenza viruses by National Influenza Centres (NICs) from 15 countries was 320. Of these, 220 (69%) were typed as influenza A and 100 (31%) as influenza B.

From the start of the pandemic in 19 April 2009 to 10 July 2010, the total number of specimens reported positive for influenza by NIC laboratories was 649,983*. Of these, 490,946 (75.5%) were pandemic A(H1N1), 8,956 (1.4%) were seasonal A(H1N1), 34,711 (5.3%) were A(H3N2), 81,000 (12.5%) were A (not subtyped) and 34,243(5.3%) were influenza B.
