A total of 79 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported from 26 states between March 1 and August 3, 2011. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics. Among the ill persons with available information, 22 (38%) have been hospitalized and 1 death has been reported. As a result of the epidemiologic and traceback investigations, as well as in-plant findings, FSIS determined that there is a link between the Cargill ground turkey products and this illness outbreak. FSIS is continuing to work with CDC, affected state public health partners, and the company on the investigation...

Government Knew About Bacteria at Plant

Salmonella Was Spotted in Turkey Facility and Stores in Past Year, but Legal Rules About Bug Prevented Recall Till Aug. 3

By BILL TOMSON

Federal officials said in recent days that they turned up a dangerous form of salmonella at a Cargill Inc. turkey plant last year, and then four times this year at stores selling the Cargill turkey, but didn't move for a recall until an outbreak killed one person and sickened 77 others.

Cargill and the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the recall of ground turkey from the Cargill plant in Springdale, Ark., on Aug. 3. The USDA said the third-largest meat recall in history affected 36 million pounds of ground turkey.

Food-safety specialists said the delay reflected a gap in federal rules that don't treat salmonella as a poisonous contaminant, even if inspectors find antibiotic-resistant forms such as the Heidelberg strain implicated in the latest outbreak.

Re: Arkansas Firm Recalls Ground Turkey Products - Multi-Drug Resistant Salmonella

CDC Aug 11, 2011:

A total of 107 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported from 31 states.

Twenty-three of these ill persons have been identified with Salmonella Heidelberg with a closely related PFGE pattern to that of the other 84 ill persons. The 23 ill persons with this closely related PFGE pattern of Salmonella Heidelberg have been included in the total count of outbreak cases.

These two closely related PFGE patterns of Salmonella Heidelberg were isolated from a ground turkey sample taken from an Ohio patient?s home and retail samples of ground turkey collected as part of routine surveillance through the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS).

Collaborative investigative efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory agencies indicate that eating ground turkey is the likely source of this outbreak.
On August 3, 2011, an Arkansas firm recalled ground turkey products due to possible Salmonella contamination.
Contaminated ground turkey is being recalled from grocery stores but may still be in consumers' homes.
Consumers should check their homes for recalled ground turkey products and not eat them; restaurant and food service operators should not serve them.
The outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics; this antibiotic resistance may be associated with an increased risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals.
