TWO new measles cases have been detected in Adelaide and health authorities are urging the public to update their vaccinations.

SA Health issued an alert today, saying the new cases were linked to a man with measles who flew from Dubai to Adelaide on July 8.

One of the new cases worked two shifts at a Burnside shoe shop and spent a night in Hindley St bars while infectious.

SA Health chief medical officer Professor Paddy Phillips said measles was highly contagious and people who had been in those areas should be alert for symptoms.

"SA Health is currently contacting those who may have spent time with either of these people to provide information and advice about prevention measures," he said.

"One visited several public places during their infectious period, including Va Bene at the Burnside Village on Friday 22 July from 11am to 5:30pm and on Saturday the 23rd July from 10am to 5pm.

"The same person was also in the Hindley Street precinct, including the Red Square Bar and Lounge and the Rosemont Hotel between 11:50pm on Saturday 23 July to 4am on Sunday 24th July.

The latest cases were in "close contact" with the original case but did not contract the virus on the flight to Adelaide...

Measles outbreak in Blacktown causes alarm

DOCTORS have warned Blacktown residents to make sure they are fully immunised to combat an outbreak of measles.

Communicable Diseases and Immunisation Manager for the western Sydney health district, Dr Vicky Sheppeard said there were more measles cases this year than for the past eight years.

She said there had been 22 measles cases reported from 2002 to 2010 in the western Sydney region and 26 this year alone in Blacktown.

??Most of these were from Mt Druitt and more than half involved children and young adults who are at particular risk of catching measles if they are not vaccinated,?? Dr Sheppeard said...

Measles outbreak at Orana school

A student from the Orana Steiner School has been admitted to hospital with measles and at least three of his classmates have been diagnosed with the illness.

ACT Chief Health Officer Paul Kelly has written to parents at the school today, saying ?We are asking parents of students at Orana School to be alert to measles symptoms.

?Health Protection Service has begun contacting people believed to have been exposed recommending post exposure prophylaxis in line with national guidelines.

?Priority has been given to contacting the household and those most recently exposed contacts at GP surgeries and the Canberra Hospital. The guideines require the measles mumps and rubella vaccine to be given within three days or normal human immunoglobulin within six days.??

Father fears more exposed to measles outbreak

Adam Noble's 15-year-old daughter Ruby seems to be over the worst of a suspected case of measles, but Mr Noble worries about how many other people she may have inadvertently exposed to the disease.

''She still has a really nasty cough and her body's still covered in a rash but it's far less aggressive than it was two or three days ago,'' Mr Noble said.

Ruby - who has not been vaccinated against measles - is a Year 9 student at the Orana Steiner School in Weston, where four of her classmates have been diagnosed with the illness and one has been admitted to hospital.

More cases are expected to be diagnosed and health authorities have the task of trying to contact everybody who may have been in close contact with sufferers, including people who may have sat next to them in medical waiting rooms.

Measles outbreak spreads, 3 hospitalised

At least a dozen people have been diagnosed with measles and three have been hospitalised as an outbreak of the infectious disease which began at the Orana Steiner School in Weston continues.

ACT chief health officer Paul Kelly said eight of the people who had fallen ill were Year 9 students from the school and four were ''community cases''.
Health authorities had asked Orana families to keep all unvaccinated students home from school to help prevent infection.

''The end of the school year will be helpful for stopping it circulating within the school community, but unfortunately when they go out on holidays they may well interact with other ... people ... around Australia and this is how this tends to spread further,'' Dr Kelly said.

''This is why we've asked people to stay at home, so hopefully it will burn out by the end of the school year.

''Anyone who's unvaccinated will most likely have been infected by then and we'll come to the end of the outbreak. But I expect there will be more cases [before then].''
Dr Kelly said the outbreak had been linked to a person who had travelled overseas.

Measles Alert - 9 December 2011

There have been two cases of measles in the Northern Territory in the past week. Measles is a very contagious disease which can be spread to non-immune people by casual contact with a person who is infected (usually via coughing or sneezing).

If you are not immune to measles it is easy to catch it from a person who is infected with the virus. To be immune you need to have either had measles or have had two measles vaccinations. If you were born before 1960 you are likely to have had measles.

Early symptoms of measles are:

• cough
• fever
• runny nose
• sore eyes

A red rash then appears a few days later.

If you think you are not immune to measles and have early symptoms of measles (fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes) contact your GP clinic and inform them that you might have measles. They should arrange for you to wait in a separate room before being seen by the doctor.

Teenager with measles sparks SA Health alert

SA Health has issued a public health alert about the highly infectious measles virus following a confirmed case in South Australia this week.

SA Health's chief medical officer Professor Paddy Phillips said the 22-year-old girl from metropolitan Adelaide most likely acquired the virus while overseas...

...During the infectious period, the teen visited the following sites:

Oriental Hotel, 120 Magill Rd, Norwood, on 11 December from 4 to 8.30pm;

Foodland, 177 Glen Osmond Rd, Frewville, on 12 December from 1 to 3.30pm;

Fountain Corner Family Practice, 57-59 Unley Rd, Parkside, on 13 December from 8.45 to 11.30am; 16 December from 9.30 to noon and again from 2 to 4.45pm;

Blockbuster, 365 Shepherd's Hill Rd, Blackwood, on 14 December from 6.30 to 8.30pm;

Hansen Yuncken Building, ground floor, 191 Fullarton Rd, Dulwich, on 12 December from 8.45 to 7.15 pm and on 15 December from 9 to 11.30am;
