Measles outbreak 'a warning'

A recent outbreak of measles at a Canberra school should serve as a warning for parents to get their children vaccinated before they start school, health officials say.

ACT Medicare Local reminded parents of the recent health scare at Orana Steiner School, where one case of measles infected a dozen other people and resulted in three people being admitted to hospital.

A number of parents at the school had chosen not to vaccinate their children and doctors say this almost certainly increased the rate of spread for the highly infectious disease...

Northland District Health Board is advising Northlanders to check that their family members are protected from Measles. This follows the notification of a 17 year old Bay of Islands woman with probable measles.

It is suspected the woman came in contact with the virus in Auckland and as at 9am on Monday, 16 January 2011, there have been 457 confirmed or probable cases of measles - 76 of those cases required hospitalisation - in the Auckland region alone...

BE ALERT for measles over the next two weeks, SA Health has warned after a 23-year-old Adelaide man is believed to have acquired the highly infectious virus while travelling overseas...

...While infectious, the man was at the following locations across the city:

Hyde Park Tavern, 187 King William Road, Hyde Park, on January 14 from 5 to 8pm.

Euro Explorations Services, 63 King William Street, Kent Town, on January 15 and 16 from 9am to 7pm.

Hughes Clinic, 160 Unley Road, Unley, on January 17 and 19 from 4:30 to 7:30pm and January 21 from 10am to 12:30pm.

Haddad Pharmacy, 160 Unley Road, Unley, on January 17 from 5 to 7:30pm and January 21 from 10:30am to 1pm.

Foot and Ankle Centre, 22 Walter Street, North Adelaide on January 19 from 11:30am to 2:30pm.

Jones and Partners Radiology on Level 1, St Andrews Hospital on January 19 from 1 to 4:30pm.

Royal Adelaide Hospital emergency department on January 22 from 5 to 7pm.

Dr Christley said anyone who was at those locations during those times should be alert for symptoms during the next two weeks...

AN Adelaide woman has contracted measles from a stranger in a rare transmission of the virus in Australia.

The woman's case has been linked to that of an Adelaide man who picked up the highly infectious virus while travelling overseas earlier this year.

SA Health yesterday warned South Australians to be alert for symptoms of the disease, which can cause brain damage in severe cases.

It is understood the woman, 44, was in the same vicinity as the man, 23, at some stage during his infectious phase...

DOCTORS have warned western Sydney residents to be vigilant after two cases of measles were diagnosed recently.

Dr Vicky Sheppeard, manager of the local public health unit, said two residents had been diagnosed with measles at Blacktown Hospital this week...

QUEENSLAND Health is concerned that a confirmed case of measles may have spread at two Brisbane locations last weekend.

Anyone who was at the South Bank Lifestyle Market on May 19 and Garden City, Upper Mt Gravatt on May 20 is being urged to stay alert for symptoms after a person attended the events who is believed to have contracted the illness in Southeast Asia.

Public health medical officer, Dr Brad McCall, said those who were at those locations on the specific dates particularly Garden City's JB Hi-Fi store on May 20 needed to ensure they were protected against measles...

THREE babies have been diagnosed with measles in Sydney's west, with health officials warning that the potentially deadly virus may have exposed others.

Measles is very infectious and can be spread by being in the same room as someone with the virus.

Three babies were diagnosed with measles at the emergency department at the Children's Hospital Westmead on May 11, following four measles cases after visiting local medical centres in Western Sydney and shopping centres in the Blue Mountains and Penrith last month.

Now the health authorities are trying to track down everyone who was recently exposed, as the onset of symptoms usually takes about 10 days but can take as long as 21 days...

Brisbane residents put on alert for measles

Queensland Health is urging residents on Brisbane's southside to be to be alert for symptoms of the highly infectious measles virus after a second case is confirmed in the area.

Commuters who use the Beenleigh-Ferny Grove train line and shoppers at the Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre are being asked to watch for symptons of the disease.

The infected person visited the popular shopping centre and The Nook Cafin Jindalee on Saturday June 3, and travelled on the Beenleigh-Ferny Grove train line northbound 12-2pm and southbound 9-11pm on 4, 5 and 6 June...

...UPDATE: Mt Ommaney Centre has urged customers and tenants concerned about personal health to contact the Queensland Health phone line or their GP in the aftermath of a measles incident at the centre on June 3.

Centre marketing manager Kate Marshall said Queensland Health had contacted the centre yesterday and confirmed a person who visited the Centre, particularly Coles and Target, was infected with the measles virus...

...According to Public Health medical officer Dr Brad McCall the infected person also visited a southwest cafe on June 3 and travelled on the Beenleigh-Ferny Grove rail service from June 4-6.

Dr McCall said the person had travelled on the Beenleigh-Ferny Grove train line northbound from 12-2pm and southbound from 9-11pm...

AN OUTBREAK of the highly infectious measles virus has been contained across the south-west but doctors are still warning residents to be vigilant of warning signs.

The alert comes after an infected person was believed to have been at Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre at Target and Coles stores and The Nook cafe at Jindalee on June 3.

However Queensland Health has since advised the 10-day cooling off period for symptoms to surface passed last week with no news of additional outbreaks...

MEASLES is spreading through the Campbelltown area after first appearing in Eagle Vale last month.

South Western Sydney Local Health District director of public health Stephen Conaty said there had been at least 22 local cases of measles since the beginning of June and the disease had now spread to suburbs around Eagle Vale...

Measles alert after teen visits NT with infection

THE TERRITORY is on measles alert after an infected tourist travelled through the Territory this month.

The Centre for Disease Control issued the warning yesterday, saying the disease is highly contagious and very serious.

CDC acting director Peter Markey said the Sydney teenager was infectious when they flew to Darwin on Jet Star flight 672, arriving on September 14 at 1.30am.

"Anyone on this flight with measles-like symptoms should see their GP," he said.

The teen then travelled through Darwin to Palmerston, Kakadu, Jabiru, Katherine and Daly Waters...

So far this year 136 cases have been reported across the state, most in the Western Sydney area, NSW Health said.

A NSW measles epidemic has spread to the Illawarra, with free vaccines now being offered at special clinics.

NSW is experiencing its worst measles epidemic in 14 years, prompting health experts to urge people to ensure they are vaccinated against the highly infectious disease.

A total of 145 cases have been reported state-wide this year, including 54 cases diagnosed in the last month, NSW Health says.

The state's single largest measles outbreak in more than a decade has spread to the Illawarra region of Sydney after initially being confined to the city's south and southwest, the department's Health Protection Director, Jeremy McAnulty, said on Thursday...
