WHOOPING cough cases in Ballarat have skyrocketed in recent years, new figures show.

Ballarat recorded 218 whooping cough cases in 2014, compared to 27 in 2013 and 38 in 2012, according to Department of Health figures.

Nine whooping cough cases have already been recorded so far this year...

...Statewide, there has been a 57.7 per cent increase in whooping cough cases, rising from 2926 in 2013 to 4615 last year, with children aged under one particularly vulnerable...

MANLY Village Public School has become the latest of 34 schools in the northern Sydney region to report a case of whooping cough in the last three months.

Parents were notified and given details on symptoms and prevention on Monday.

The school did not wish to comment...

Experts fear outbreak of whooping cough in NSW as confirmed cases up 300 per cent in one year

ASES of whooping cough are up 300 per cent in NSW compared to the same time last year and almost half of those have been in children under the age of 10.

According to NSW Health, of the 1328 cases of the disease in NSW so far this year, 589 were under the age of 10.

In the most vulnerable age group, those under the age of six months and therefore not covered by immunisation, 25 babies fought for their lives.

There were 73 babies aged seven months to 23 months who also contracted whooping cough and 214 pre-school-aged children.

In the five to nine year age group, 277 children have had whooping cough.

According to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance there have been 3248 cases nationally...

Alarming rise in number of reported whooping cough cases

There has been an alarming rise in whooping cough, with reported cases up by more than 300 percent in New South Wales.

The dramatic rise in reported cases is causing real concern, because the cases are taking place in regions which are regarded as having high immunisation levels.

The Hills Shire has the highest number of reported cases followed by Blacktown, Warringah, Lake Macquarie and Sutherland...

There has been a spike in whooping cough in the Illawarra, with 13 cases confirmed at one northern suburbs primary school...

...NSW Health figures show whooping cough notifications across the state have more than trebled this year; with 2779 notifications so far, compared to 911 in the same period last year...

BENDIGO is in the midst of its worst winter for whooping cough in years, with infection rates of the respiratory disease already three-and-a-half times higher than it was at this stage in 2014.

The City of Greater Bendigo has recorded 81 cases of whooping cough (pertussis) this year as of August 18, up from 47 total cases in 2014 and 26 in 2013...
