AN 800 per cent increase in Barwon region whooping cough cases has health authorities urging locals to get booster shots for the potentially fatal condition.

Cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, have risen from 89 in 2008 in the Barwon southwestern region to 743 in 2010, including 46 in the past month.

Barwon Health department of infectious diseases associate professor Eugene Athan said yesterday that local health officials were well aware of the trend, and had been taking preventative action...

Whooping cough is rearing its head again

Whooping cough cases have soared in the Hume region with 328 cases reported in 2010, a fivefold increase in just two years.

In 2008 there were only 59 cases, and 252 in 2009.

Greater Shepparton municipal health officer Dr John Mackellar said the increase was in line with state and national trends which indicated a resurgence of the potentially fatal illness...

A worrying outbreak in whooping cough has forced the state government to offer free vaccinations for parents of newborn babies in a bid to prevent the infection spreading.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, can cause severe health problems in young babies, including pneumonia, seizures and has the potential to cause permanent disability or death.

Whooping cough epidemics occur every few years with the last severe outbreak in 2004 and with infection rates on the rise, 2011 is shaping up as another outbreak year.

THE number of people suffering whooping cough in the Barwon region continues to soar, despite the warnings of health authorities.

An 800 per cent increase in Barwon region whooping cough cases in the past two years has seen health authorities urging locals to get booster shots for the potentially fatal condition.

Cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, have risen from 89 in 2008 in the Barwon southwestern region to 743 in 2010.

There have been a further 88 cases so far this year 17 more than for the same first five weeks of 2010 and just one short of the total for all of 2008...

AN outbreak of whooping cough in Maroondah has prompted doctors to warn that anyone in contact with babies should be vaccinated against the disease.

Twenty-three cases have been reported in the municipality so far this year, with four cases reported in the past week.

Eastern Health?s Mary O?Reilly said the disease had broken out across Melbourne over the past six months...

Whooping cough baby dies in Royal Childen's Hospital

A BABY who died of whooping cough in the Royal Children's Hospital this week is the first to die of the disease in Victoria since an outbreak began two years ago.

The last recorded death from whooping cough in Victoria was in March 2004.

The RCH confirmed a baby died of the disease "earlier this week", but refused to confirm the age of the baby or the day the baby died, citing privacy reasons...

Whooping cough spike raises alarm bells

Health authorities are investigating a spike in the number of cases of whooping cough in the Territory.

There were 127 cases in January and 66 have been recorded so far this month.

ACT Acting Chief Health Officer Paul Kelly says it is a worrying trend.

"Part of it is the natural increase that happens every three to four years, but this is something higher than that," he said...

The North Coast Public Health Unit says there has been a recent spike in the number of whooping cough cases reported in the region...

...Paul Corben, from the Public Health Unit, says vaccination rates in the Byron Shire are currently below 70 percent, while the regional average is more than 86 percent.

He says there have been 74 reported cases of whooping cough on the north coast so far this year...

THE Department of Health has recorded 27 cases of whooping cough in Greater Bendigo this year.

Department spokesman Bram Alexander said nine cases were recorded in the same period last year and only one in 2009.

Ninety-nine cases have been reported so far this year in the Loddon Mallee region, compared with 35 in the same period in 2010.

Mr Alexander said the rise was proportional across the state...

WHITTLESEA residents have been urged to keep up to date with whooping cough injections in the face of a recorded spike in infections across Melbourne.

Victorian Health Department figures show 100 cases of whooping cough recorded in Whittlesea last year, compared with 70 cases in 2009 and 27 in 2008.

This year there have been 22 cases since January...

TOOWOOMBA schools are bracing for a ?mini epidemic? of deadly whooping cough with 44 cases confirmed in the Darling Downs already this month.

Early treatment can help prevent the infection spreading of Whooping cough.

TOOWOOMBA schools are bracing for a ?mini epidemic? of deadly whooping cough with 44 cases confirmed in the Darling Downs already this month.

The Darling Downs Public Health Unit has sent letters to schools across the city warning them of the outbreak.

The infection, which is particularly deadly to newborns, can last for many weeks once the cough starts.

Last month, 111 cases of whooping cough were confirmed in the Darling Downs compared with 46 in February last year and 88 were confirmed in January compared with 42 in the same month last year.

This month, 44 cases have been confirmed already, compared with just 39 for the month of March last year...

HEALTH authorities have issued a warning to parents following a 50 per cent rise in cases of a potentially fatal disease.

Some 46 cases of whooping cough have been diagnosed in the Hastings and Macleay areas already this year.

This figure is 50 per cent higher than the average for the past five years.

North Coast Area Health Service public health director Paul Corben said the rise in the number of reported cases might be due, in part, to ?better case detection? because of new technology.

But the whooping cough outbreak had been a problem across the state for the past three years...

A SPIKE in the number of cases of whooping cough reported on the North Coast and elsewhere in the state has NSW Health concerned the potentially fatal disease could be finding a firmer foothold.

In response to the rising number of cases, Health Minister Jillian Skinner announced last week the State Government's free whooping cough vaccination program, which provides vaccinations for new parents, grandparents and carers of children under 12 months old, would be extended until at least December in a bid to curb the infection rate.

Paul Corben, North Coast director of public health, said this was a wise move with early statistics painting a worrying picture for the remainder of the year.

?So far this year on all of the North Coast we've had 315 cases of whooping cough ? that's pretty close to what we had all of last year,? Mr Corben said.

?On a year-to-date basis, compared to the average of the previous five years, it's 30% above ? that's alarming.?

Mr Corben said in the last four weeks alone on the North Coast, there had been 83 cases of whooping cough, a disease to which infants and young children are particularly vulnerable...

THE potentially deadly whooping cough disease is raging across the Sunshine Coast, with infections almost doubling in the past year.

Queensland Health figures, in fact, show that in the past four years ? in the period January to May ? the number of people diagnosed with the disease has risen nearly 1000%, from 43 to 426.

The figure has nearly doubled from last year, with 218 confirmed cases from January 1 to May 25, 2010, and 426 in the same period in 2011...

According to reports, the Western Local Health District has stated that despite a crucial uptake of a free vaccine against whooping cough, nearly thrice the number of cases in the region have been recently recorded.

Also, 314 reported cases of whooping cough till the end of May has been reported, as there were 110 cases in the first 3 quarters of last year...
