Three new measles cases in Queensland has public health authorities worried about spread

THREE new cases of the highly contagious measles virus have been diagnosed in Queensland, worrying public health authorities.
The new cases, all three in Ipswich, take the numbers in the state's recent cluster to 10.
One of them had visited the Ipswich Hospital on a number of occasions between September 6 and 11.
A separate case attended the Leichhardt pharmacy about midday last Saturday...

PEOPLE are being asked to check whether they could have come into contact with the person with Toowoomba's first confirmed case of the measles this year.
Darling Downs Public Health unit director Dr Penny Hutchinson said the affected individual, who was unaware she was infectious, had been to the following locations:

Grand Central Shopping Centre (mostly Target) - 9-11am, September 12
Sizzler Restaurant in Toowoomba at dinner time, September 12
Medical centre, James and West Sts, morning of September 13

HEALTH authorities have warned of a potential measles outbreak in the Ipswich and Springfield areas after several cases of the infectious disease were reported to West Moreton Hospital and Health Service.
On Tuesday the service warned people who voted at a Leichhardt school on September 7 or visited Aldi in Springfield on September 8 may have come into contact with the disease.
The announcement was in addition to last Friday's health alert release which said a man presented to Ipswich Hospital with the disease between September 6-11 and an infected woman attended a Leichhardt pharmacy on September 7....

NSW Health has warned people to be on the lookout for measles symptoms after three Sydney men fell ill with the infectious disease.
The men, aged between 25 and 35, may have been infected when they recently spent time in Sydney's inner suburbs, including Alexandria, Waterloo, Earlwood and Hurlstone Park.
They also visited medical centres in Rozelle, Croydon and Rockdale and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital emergency department while infectious in the past week...

QUEENSLAND'S measles outbreak continues to worsen with another case recorded in Ipswich.
The latest infected person, among a cluster of eight Ipswich people infected during the past two months, had visited Ipswich police station and courthouse on several occasions last week.

Bali holidaymakers have been warned to watch for measles symptoms after four West Australian travellers contracted the disease in the past week after returning from Indonesia.
The WA Health Department director of communicable disease control Paul Armstrong said people were also potentially exposed to infection at general practice surgeries where the infected cases were seen.
He said other risk areas were pathology collection centres and emergency departments at Royal Perth, Sir Charles Gairdner and Armadale-Kelmscott hospitals.

Gold Coast residents and tourists need to be on alert for measles symptoms after an infectious patient visited a popular local theme park, authorities say.
Queensland's chief health officer, Dr Jeannette Young, says a 13-year-old NSW boy with measles visited Dreamworld on October 2, during the school holidays.
She said anyone who was at Dreamworld on that date should check the status of their vaccination record, and talk to their GP if they don't think they are fully protected...

A 12TH Ipswich measles case has been confirmed.
West Moreton Hospital and Health Service public health physician Dr Kari Jarvinen said an unknowingly infectious man caught the 4.40pm train from East Ipswich station to Booval station last Thursday then walked through Booval Fair.
"To date 11 of the 12 confirmed measles cases in Ipswich had occurred in adults who were born after 1966," Dr Jarvinen said...

Queensland Health is preparing to vaccinate 900 prisoners at the Woodford Correctional Centre, north of Brisbane, where there has been a confirmed outbreak of measles.
Tests yesterday confirmed four prisoners have the highly contagious disease, with fifth inmate having symptoms.

PARENTS are being urged to check their children's measles vaccinations records after two WA children were confirmed with the disease.
Health Department director of communicable disease control Paul Armstrong said two unvaccinated children, aged 13 months and 15 months, had been diagnosed with measles this week.
