Measles Cases Surge in NSW, Prompting Health Warnings

Measles cases are rising sharply across New South Wales, with more than 33 cases detected this year alone. According to ABC News, health authorities express concern about the potential for undetected community infections.

In the first three months of 2026, a total of 38 cases of measles were confirmed, with five cases lacking any known source of infection. Vicky Sheppeard, director of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District’s Public Health Unit, noted that most cases are linked to returned travellers from south-east Asian countries, where significant outbreaks have been reported.

Dr. Sheppeard emphasized that the unidentified cases suggest the virus may be spreading locally, raising alarms for health officials. “In order to prevent an outbreak, we need to identify all cases and make sure that all their contacts are followed up,” she stated.​..

Residents in Sydney’s south are on alert for measles after a case was detected in the Sutherland Shire.

A traveller tested positive after returning from Southeast Asia where there is an outbreak of measles.

The person visited multiple locations across the shire while unknowingly infectious, including healthcare facilities, food outlets, shopping centres, retail stores and an auto repair shop.​..

...There have been 47 measles cases detected in NSW this year, increasing the risk of contracting the deadly disease...

A confirmed measles case has sparked a public health alert across NSW, with health authorities warning infectious exposure may have occurred at multiple healthcare and community locations.



The alert was issued after NSW Health was notified of a confirmed case in a returned traveller from South and Southeast Asia, where ongoing outbreaks of measles are being reported.

The person was infectious while visiting several sites across the state, including healthcare facilities.

NSW Health has confirmed a full list of exposure locations is published on its website and is being updated as contact tracing continues...

Measles case confirmed in SA teenager as health authorities warn of exposure at Adelaide locations

SA Health is urging South Australians to watch for measles symptoms after a teenager tested positive, with several Adelaide locations, an airport and international flights identified as potential exposure sites.

A teenager from South Australia has been diagnosed with measles, with SA Health warning people who were in several locations while the teenager was infectious that they may have been exposed.

The locations include Brighton Secondary School, an Adelaide Metro bus, Adelaide Airport and two international flights.

SA Health says the listed locations no longer pose an ongoing risk, but anyone who was there at the specified times and is not fully immunised should remain alert for symptoms over the coming weeks.

The confirmed exposure locations and times are:

Brighton Secondary School, 305 Brighton Road, North Brighton – Wednesday, September 9th from 8:45am to 3:45pm and Thursday, September 10th from 3:15pm to 4:30pm.
Adelaide Metro Bus 265 from the City to Marion Centre, stop 29 to the terminus – Thursday, September 10th from 4:30pm to 5pm.
Adelaide Airport – Tuesday, September 8th from 7:20am to 9:30am.
Singapore Airlines flight SQ279 from Singapore to Adelaide – Monday, September 7th, departing Singapore at 11:20pm.
Singapore Airlines flight SQ431 from the Maldives to Singapore – Monday, September 7th, departing at 1:10pm...

Northern NSW Local Health District is advising people to be alert for signs and symptoms of measles after being notified of a confirmed case who visited multiple locations across Byron Shire, including Byron Central Hospital, while unknowingly infectious.

The case recently returned from Southeast Asia, where there are ongoing outbreaks of measles in several countries.

People who attended the following locations should watch for the development of symptoms. These locations do not pose an ongoing risk.
