A new outbreak of dengue fever has been declared in the far north Queensland town of Innisfail.

Queensland Health on Friday declared an outbreak after receiving confirmation at least one locally acquired case of the mosquito-borne virus.

One resident has been diagnosed with the virus and authorities are awaiting confirmation on another suspected case in the town.

Advertisement: Story continues below Queensland Health Medical Director Dr Jeffrey Hanna urged residents, particularly those in East Innisfail, to take steps to prevent a repeat of the 2009 outbreak which resulted in 35 residents being diagnosed with the virus.

Dengue fever outbreaks have emerged in the cyclone-affected Cassowary Coast, sparking concerns that increased outdoor movement in the clean-up zone will lead to a rise in cases.

Yesterday, there were eight confirmed cases of the potentially deadly virus since late last month, along with several more people awaiting blood tests.

All the confirmed cases are people from adjoining houses in East Innisfail, where Cyclone Yasi brushed past last week, dumping torrential rain on the far north Queensland sugar town.

Another two cases have been confirmed in the north Queensland hub of Townsville this week, adding to the 31 cases of the virus in the city over the past six months.

Authorities are concerned the extra rain and increased human activity will boost the number of confirmed cases...

'Vicious' dengue takes hold in far north Qld

Authorities are very concerned about the spread of a "vicious'' strain of dengue fever in far north Queensland.

Twenty people have now been diagnosed with type two dengue at east Innisfail, south of Cairns.

Another five have tested positive for type four dengue.

Dr Jeffrey Hannah from Queensland Health says about half of those diagnosed have been hospitalised.

"The dengue two is certainly a vicious strain of the virus," he said...

TOWNSVILLE residents have been warned to prepare for a large dengue outbreak following Cyclone Yasi.

Queensland Health said there was at least one active outbreak in the north Queensland city before the cyclone hit, and the disease now appears to be spreading...

...There have been five confirmed cases of dengue type one in the Townsville suburb of Cranbrook so far, with at least two confirmed cases in other suburbs, although authorities have not determined the strain of the virus involved in those cases.

Meanwhile, 24 people have been infected in Innisfail, with more than a dozen hospitalised as a result of a type 2 dengue outbreak...

A dengue fever outbreak in far north Queensland is worsening, with nearly 40 people diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease.

A total of 31 people have been diagnosed with type-two dengue at East Innisfail, south of Cairns, and another eight have type-four.

Queensland Health says the outbreak has so far managed to stay contained to East Innisfail...

DENGUE fever is on the rise in far north Queensland, with a Cairns resident testing positive to the virus and the number of Innisfail cases rising to 41.

Health authorities are fighting two outbreaks of the mosquito-borne virus in Innisfail, with about half the 33 people diagnosed with type 2 dengue requiring admission to hospital.

The sugar town has also recorded eight cases of type 4 dengue this year and test results on 11 cases are pending.

An outbreak of type 1 dengue in Townsville has so far affected seven people.

Queensland Health's tropical regional services medical officer Steven Donohue said the Cairns case was the same virulent type 2 strain causing concerns in Innisfail...

The department says 45 of the cases are type 2 dengue and eight cases are type 4.

CAIRNS has recorded its first outbreak of dengue fever for the year.

One Mooroobool resident and one Manunda resident have ben diagnosed with locally acquired dengue fever, according to Queensland Health.

It is believed the outbreak originated in Mooroobool.

The type of dengue has yet to be confirmed, and it is not known whether the dengue cases are linked to the current Innisfail outbreak, where there have been 55 cases diagnosed...

A Perth-based doctor has contracted dengue fever from a needlestick injury, in the first recorded case of its kind in Australia.

The 27-year-old resident medical officer became ill in January with high fever, muscle weakness and headache.

"She recalled that five days prior to symptom onset, she had sustained a penetrating needlestick injury through her gloved finger while taking blood," Dr Ben Clark, from the Department of Infectious Diseases at Fremantle Hospital, said.

Increasing numbers of Australians are returning home with the mosquito-borne disease.

The explosion in the number of dengue fever cases in Australia this year is a result of travellers being unaware of the dangers and becoming infected overseas, particularly in south-east Asia.

This has led to a plea by the Australian Medical Association for those returning from holiday or arriving from other countries to be vigilant about avoiding the disease.

"If you take precautions with mosquitoes, you shouldn't catch it and you can't bring it home," the association's federal vice-president, Steve Hambleton, says. "Overseas, dengue is everywhere."

In Australia, the number of people who tested positive to dengue in the three months to March more than doubled from the same period last year, figures from the World Health Organisation show.

There have been 354 cases of dengue fever so far this year, compared with 156 last year. Almost half of them were reported in Western Australia, where the numbers jumped from 85 in the first quarter of last year to 166 this year.

A spokeswoman for the WA Department of Health says none of the most recent infections were contracted in the state. "Nearly all cases were acquired in south-east Asian countries, predominantly in Bali," she says.

This was similar to last year, when travellers returning from Bali accounted for more than 80 per cent of cases of dengue fever in the state.
