A potentially fatal virus detected in birds in the Macquarie Marshes has been transmitted to a human.
Health authorities say a woman in north-west New South Wales has contracted this season's first case of Murray Valley encephalitis.
Public health physician Dr Tony Merritt says the disease is rare and the last large outbreak was in 1974.
The disease has also been detected in chickens in the Macquarie Marshes, about 100 kilometres from Brewarrina, Walgett, Nyngan and Coonamble.
