South Australian man struck by Murray Valley Encephalitis

A CASE of a serious tropical disease has been confirmed in South Australia for the first time in 37 years.

A 47-year-old man from regional SA was admitted to hospital with the first confirmed case of Murray Valley Encephalitis since 1974.

SA Health chief medical officer Professor Paddy Phillips said the department was also aware of a 27-year-old man hospitalised with a suspected case of MVE who was in a serious condition.

"Murray Valley Encephalitis is a serious illness and there is no specific treatment or vaccine to protect against it," he said.

"The disease is spread via mosquito bites and is not transmitted from person to person.

"Because the virus is carried by water birds which are mobile we have to assume MVE is potentially present wherever these birds and mosquitos are..."

Two people catch dangerous mosquito virus

Two people are believed to be suffering from a potentially fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes, the Northern Territory Health Department says.

One patient is "quite unwell" with Murray Valley Encephalitis but the other has been released from hospital, the department says.

Both patients are in the Barkly region of the Territory...
