Avian influenza case in Schwan in Eastern Styria

Avian influenza or bird flu was found in a swan in the Styrian district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld on Tuesday: As the AGES announced on Wednesday, they detected the avian influenza virus, subtype H5N1, in the animal. This subtype is very disease-causing to birds and often leads to many deaths, especially in domestic poultry flocks. The district and neighboring communities in the Weiz district have now been classified as a risk area...

...Avian influenza had already appeared in a small poultry farm in Lower Austria in November. In Carinthia, 64 municipalities had already been declared a risk area and compulsory stables were imposed.
