Blood shortage in city as donors fear swine flu

BANGALORE: Bangalore is facing an acute shortage of blood due to unfounded fears about swine flu.
People are not coming forward to donate blood and some blood donation camps at workplaces and colleges have been cancelled due to swine flu.
Bangalore needs around 1,000 units of blood everyday.
Medical director of Rotary TTK Blood Bank Dr Latha Jagannathan said, ?In the the last three months, there has been a sharp rise in the number of dengue cases in the state.
"In Bangalore alone, 250 dengue cases have been traced and many of them are cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. These patients need four to eight units of platelet transfusions to survive.
Therefore, the demand for blood has increased even more.? ?One will not get swine flu by donating blood. Moreover blood will not be taken from anyone having flu symptoms.
Citizens are requested to donate blood and save lives,? she added.
